run away on fuel screw?

Postby krazykarl454 » Sun May 18, 2008 7:57 pm

so how many turns can u go in on your power screw b4 it starts to run away? i turned it in about 2 turns and it was running strong, and wanted more fuel, but it felt like it was tryin to run away. as i was driving i would let of the pedal to shift n it would hold that RPM for about 5 seconds b4 it would start to drop, but it never the RPM never jumped up, it was likethe throttle was stickin, but it wasn't, i checked out all the linkage and springs and everythnig snaps back ok. ALSO.... if i turned the screw back down like a 1/4 turn it wouldn't do it, and b4 i touched the screw it didn't have a problem. also it felt like it was bottoming out when i turned it in the 2 turns? i herd of people doin like 4 turns? what gives. my MODS are hx40, POD's, 3Gsk, n fliped the fuel pin to the deepest settin, and removed the plastic spacer under the diaphram. THANKS for the help

sounds like you at the point of runaway.. some people can get 4 some can get 8. what i do is i turn the fuel screw 1/2 turn at a time and hit the throttle. if the rpm come back down right away then go another 1/2 turn untill it hangs and slowly come back down. at that point i back it out a 1/4.

if it were me i would back it out a 1/4 being that yours is a stick. this way its not hangin up ther when you go threw the gears..

Hanging rpm's in between shifts is a sign of being on the edge of runaway. In my 92 I only got 3 turns on the fuel screw before I reached that point. On my 90 2 turns produced some interesting behaviors. When I was driving in stop and go traffic in second gear, once I got above 20 it wanted to accelerate up to redline without any additional throttle input. I could let out of the throttle and it would immediately drop speed and rpms, it never hung rpms between shifts, but it just wanted to accelerate by itself in a low load/high rpm setting. Every injection pump is different.

It's a fun trait of the VE pump...

How when you're up over 2300 or so RPM, and you take the foot off the pedal, it kind of wavers back and forth by itself until it slowly comes back down through assistance with the service brakes.

I wouldn't trade that for anything. 8)

I'd grind the fuel pin. I have a DDP fuel pin (like the Old Smokey pin) and it helped top end fueling. The thing with grinding the pin is to not take any (or only a small amount) off of the bottom (wide end) of the ramp and to take more off as you move up the ramp. This will help keep low end smoke manageable while giving you more top end fuel.

I have noticed that my govenor does not act like a Diesel gov any more. I can push the pedal 1/8 way down and it will rev all the way up in nuetral. It almost acts like a non gov gas engine now. Does not bother when driving.
