fuel solenoid

Postby Lee Majors » Sat Jun 28, 2008 4:16 pm

As posted in another forum my 91.5 D350 will crank and crank but won't seem to fire over. I cracked injector line #1&2 @ the injector and while my fiance cranked over the motor NO fuel came out.

I am new to VE pumps only had this truck 5 weeks now. Im used to P-pumps and you can actually see the shutdown solonoid on the side of the pump.

Where is the shutdown solonoid on the VE pumps? Is this a part that can be regularly bought at a parts store? I need to have this truck running by monday to head off to work....its saturday night and my options are limited.

the shot off sylinoyed is on the 12mm pump head by the injector lines, be best way to fix the problem is to unscrew it pull it out and gut it then put it back in and become a member of the pull cable club :D

There is an extra lever on the outside of the pump body, below the AFC. That's the one. ;) You may want to break off the top of the bracket on the end of the pump for easier access to the solenoid. I cut mine part way then used a crescent wrench to break it off. Some people just use the wrench.
Did you check to make sure you had a good connection on the wire terminal? The spade gets loose and makes bad contact.
Turn on the key, and touch the wire to the post, you should hear it click if it's good. If not, you can pull the solenoid and remove the plunger and the spring until you get a new one.

Ok so I took the solonoid out....pulled that little plunger looking thing out along with the spring. Put the solonoid back in and connected the two wires togather again (not sure if im suposed to do that or not) and still no fuel getting to the injectors

Im sure I did something wrong here but can't figure it out.

Have you tried to see if your lift pump is pumping by cracking the feed line at the IP and using the hand primer? Sounds like a lift pump issue possibly IP.

Ok so the lift pump on my first gen looks nothing like the one on my second gen.

I don't see a hand primer bulb like my second gen. I do however see a twisted metal lever that has a 90* sweep motion...almost more like a on off valve than primer ?

I tried loosening the feed line or what I thought was the feed line on the front of the pump closest to the timing cover and all it did was twist the fuel line to the point of almost snapping out of shape possible cracking it.

The valve on the lift pump that I saw moves very freely....not sure if that might mean its broken?

Will a second gen lift pump fit on a 1st gen?

does the starter have to come off in order to get the lift pump off?

The 2nd gen pump can fit onto the 1st gen, but it requires a spacer plate, the gaskets for the spacer plate, and the hose. Cummins has all the parts required.

Moreover, it requires a bypass pressure regulator. The second gen lift pump puts out ~50 PSI while the first gen stock lift pump puts out ~15 PSI. Or, they sell piston pumps that are externally similar to the second gen lift pump, but that have 15 PSI springs in them. That's a Cummins part number as well.

Back to the drawing board. Im still trying my best to get this thing working tonight so I can get to work tomarrow.

How do I test to see if the lift pump works? like I said there is that little lever on the side ? is that what you use to hand pump the fuel?

Once I gutted the shutoff solonoid I connected those two wires via that little V they were plugged onto. But I did not reconnect that to the solonoid I just kinda left them hanging there.

Is that wrong?

still can't figure out why I have no fuel at the injectors. I loosened the fuel feed line at the lift pump and cranked the motor over and no fuel came out. I just broke the nut loose and backed it all the way out. I coudln't get the fuel line physically out without bending it so I left it there while cranking but still no fuel coming out! Fuel guage reads 1/4 tank but im on a hill on my driveway blocking my garage. Just for safety I added an additional 5 gallons via gas can to make sure it wasen't a bad guage reading. I thought the lift pumps never go bad they just get weak? its run off the cam correct?

To get it going tonight, run to NAPA or Auto Zone and get a 5-10psi electric lift pump. Wire it into the old selinoid wire for a keyed hot and ground it to the frame. You can leave the old pump in place but would need to cut the steel line with a small tubing cutter before and after the lift pump to couple in with rubber 3/8" hose and slide it over the steel and double hose clamp it to seal. IT DOES WORK. I have done this. This is why I ended up replacing all fuel lines and ditching the stock filter/heater crap. Much cleaner when I was done. But this will get it on the road in a pinch.

The lever on the LP is the primer lever. If it doesn't do anything, turn the engine over a little, it may be on high cam. It should feel stiff until it builds up, then it feels free, like now.
With the plunger out, the solenoid won't do anything, it's a straight shot for the fuel. The wires are irrelevant like this.
I bet the LP crapped out on you.
