tractor motor

Postby slicknickz » Thu Jul 03, 2008 9:37 pm

Ok I have a 85 crew cab project truck that needs a motor. I found a motor out of a case international tractor. its a 6BTA (aftercooled) I was wondering if the motor would work in the truck with no major problems with the belhousing and if the aftercooler is not connected to head or anything. I can get a good deal on the motor and was wonderin if it can be done. thanks

The IP is different but it can work. You will need a dodge/cummins engine adapter and flex plate/flywheel though. The after cooler is no biggy, the heads are the same. There is a guy buy 6LCUMMINS that has a tractor engine in his Chevy Crew Cab. I believe the governor assembly is different and it has no AFC function in the IP.

I was reading in an article that they used the motor no problem but did have to put the bigger governor springs in it to run otherwise it was not road happy and it would be like alot of the guys using the stationary industrial 4cyl. in jeep applications

I think with some pump changes, or a different, automotive pump, it'd work just fine. The cam may be an issue- as it's designed to run at <2200rpm. And it may not.

Tractor and forklift injection pumps are designed to operate at variable speeds determined by the position if the throttle lever. Generators and agriculture pump versions are normally set to run at around 1800 RPM's to to the frequency requirement of the generator or the pump impeller profile to prevent cavitation in the water flow. The only real problem you may encounter is that not all tractor engines have the emissions certification tag on the gear case near the CPL tag. This tag is required in some states to pass the minimum emissions requirements.
