Whats going on?

Postby Ezra » Wed Aug 20, 2008 11:28 am

Ok guys..I have 93 w250 auto.3wks ago I had a pump from industrial injection installed..Every since,It doesnt want to start right off, then when it does big cloud of white smoke and sounds like it miss's for a min or 2.Then when I drive it ,it almost has a cackaling sound when accelerating.A couple guys on DTR advised pressurizing the fuel system.I tried that and found no leaks. What else can I check myself? I'm on a limited budget for now and dont have a shop.Ezra.

Sounds like the timing was retarded on installation.

I was just reading about some similar things that happened to you Begle1.So timing? would that make it start hard? Ezra

It would make it start very hard. At one point I could only get mine started with ether, then it smoked white and ran like crap.

Which sounds a little like what you have going on. ;)

So then all I need to do is rotate towards the head?

I'm going to bet that would help.

You're probably going to have to pull the pump off and reinstall with a new key, but pushing it to the head would verify the diagnosis.

Well I dont think advancing the timing will be to hard,But reinstalling the pump is a differnent story.Could I get away with just advancing the timing?

It might possibly work.

Reinstallation involves unbolting the three bolts that hold the pump onto the timing case, unbolting the AFC banjo bolt, unbolting the six injection lines, taking the oil fill spout off, taking off the pump gear, then pressing off the pump, finding a new key, and repeating the process in reverse.

It is quite a bit of work. Advance it as far as you can without taking it off first to see if it helps things.

Ok I tried one more time to see if it was air, bled all the injector lines.Next morning same thing. So if its timing,Where do I get a s shaped-wrench?

I still say air leak. Who put the pump on can surely set the timing if they think it's the problem.

Well unfortunetly I went with one of those deals ,with whoever was the cheapest. When he got done,he had the tps on backwords so,I question how much he knows about the older ones.Gotta any suggjustion on check for a leak? other than pressurizing the system(all ready tried that) Ezra.

OK, lets rethink this. The truck starts hard the first try. Once it's running you can shut it off and restart with ease....correct? Only after it sits it becomes hard to start? The cackling goes away..yes...no?? If the fuel system has a leak, the miss can be generated by air in the lines. My old 91 had a pinhole in the return line and never dripped but after it sat overnight it would hardly start and once it did...bbbluhhh...bbbluhh bbbluhhh vrooommmmmmmmmmmm. If that isn't understood, it's a miss :P

Yes it only starts hard after sitting and on the first try..The cackiling doesnt realy go away, just the loudest when I'm acceclerating.but where my concern lies the white smoke.I hadnt started it all day tell about 6:30pm.Second try it fired up and was missing .Same cloud of white smoke. So I let it warm up for 15min's, it just hazed white smoke the whole time,Then I reved it a little and it seemed to clear up..What the heck?
