Computer Problems

Postby Callan » Sat Sep 27, 2008 2:51 pm

Hey guys, I need some help here.

My uncle has the same truck as mine but entirely stock so look at the signature below for the specs. He is having problems with the computer, lights stay on and randomly shifts into overdrive when it feels like it. Now will installing a pot just bypass the tps or the computer as a whole?

Also is there any way to eliminate the computer? I know its wishful thinking but these things are expensive when they go and we're not too inclined to get a new one. Then again if anyone had one kicking around let me know if you want to part with it.

thanks for the help guys

The PCM can be done away with. You just have to install manual controls for the stuff it does. OD, like you mentioned, external voltage regulator, grids on a switch, lose the WIF sensor or wire it directly, etc. The speedometer gets a 5v signal from it, I think. There may be some other things on the later models.

It's nothing very difficult, just alot of little details, any one of which will render some function inop if not properly addressed.

ok so far on the truck the voltage regulator has been wired already. and I see how you have to wire the speedometer directly, this has been done on my truck.

Do you wire the OD just like I mentioned with simply installing a pot?

What do you mean by grids on a switch?

What is the WIF sensor? sorry i am horrible on short forms.

would you have to install switches for tranny lock up etc?

Thanks for all the help guys, i have my research cut out for me

The overdrive can be wired with a potentiometer or just a toggle switch. I have mine non-original overdrive on a toggle switch.

I would think that you would still need the computer with the pot, or make a simple little breadboard circuit with a comparator.

Your heater grids can be put on a switch of whatever complexity; either a simple toggle or a latching relay that'll turn off automatically like a rear window defroster. I think that the heater grids will let smoke out if left on for longer than ten seconds; mine stayed on once and melted the little plastic boots over the terminals. But most people don't really need the grids anyways. You get better power and mileage without them.

I didn't know that the water in fuel (WIF) sensor went through the computer; how does that circuit work? I thought the water in the bowl completed the light circuit or something simple-stupid like that...

There is no lock-up, but if you did have lock-up you can put it on a switch as well.

I think I'm getting rid of my computer in a matter of days.
