intercooler?

Postby Redneckintraining » Fri Dec 26, 2008 10:15 pm

I would like to put an intercooler on my 89.Problem is I HATE the grills dodge put on the 90's and up.Is there a way to put an intercooler on the truck without changing to the dorky 90+ grill?

When I bought my 89 it had a small intercooler from banks that the original owner put on in 1991. Part of the kit was a tube grill. Thats what I have now with the powerstroke cooler in place. I don't think a stock grill would fit infront of a powerstroke unit.

You have a 1st gen, you will have to make compromises all the time. no one seems to make things for our old ladys anymore.

A first gen intercooler will fit fine with a little fab work to the core support. You will need to get rid of your ac to use that grill. 89 grills are the same as the 90 grills they canged in 91.

I remember reading that if you trim the back of the stock grille, you can keep your AC. I'll try to find a link.

It fits, no trimming necessary. You just gotta be a little creative. The AC condenser is in there too.

I dont have AC but I do have the automatic cooler. the grill im talking about is the grill that is flat all the way across. Not the one with the bump in the middle-91+ grill.I have an 89 and I want to keep its grill. How much fab work to the core support to fit a first gen intercooler and keep the stock grille?

I'm trying to find one I like... Once I get a pic of my truck down to size, I'll have a permanent one. :)

the IC will fit behind your grille with some trimming.

this is the stock 83 grille infront of a banks IC. the PO was responsible for this. he sure couldnt wire anything to save his life though. it looked decent.

if you dont have a dremel, get one. i wouldnt trade mine for anything, i use it constantly.
