Oil system priming, How long should it take after dormant

Postby jltait » Wed Jan 07, 2009 5:41 pm

Newbie here Looking for some help. I have a cummins I bought a couple years ago and now finally have it up on a test stand ready to test fire it. I rolled it over long enough to get all six injectors purged. Meanwhile I had removed the Oil sending unit an installed mechanical gage. I have yet to see any oil pressure on this gage. How long will I have to roll it over to see some pressure? I am starting to get concerned!

I would take one of the oil galley plugs out of the drivers side of the block and pour oil through the turbo oil feed till it came out that galley. Then put the plug back in and check the pressure.

KTA, Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I did the reverse. I pulled the 1/8"npt on the drivers side ant tried to push oil in that direction. Also rolled it over some more making sure to keep the starter cool, Still no luck so tonight before I came in I started an oil IV with a covered funnel to trickle oil into the 1/8"npt adjacent to the the turbo feed line on the oil filter housing. I will try again tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback!

It Runs!!!

Postby jltait » Sat Jan 10, 2009 3:36 pm

Well got it running, Never did get oiling system to prime rolling it over. I firgured that after running oil into the oil galley for several hours that it should at least have a coating of oil on surfaces. Anyway had lots of isssues with the lift pump. Primed then lost its prime and would not pump at all. I replaced it, primed it, bled the injectors and it fired back up. Had a bad leak at the injection pump fuel feed line fitting, fixed that problem then had to bleed injetors to get it to fired again. Now seems to start good with 80psi oil pressure (is this about right for a cold start at about 55 degree temp). The rear main is leaking though. Anyone know what is involved in replacing the rear main? Thanks for all the help thus far.

Glad to hear you got it running! The rear main is easy. Is it still on the stand?, just pop off the flywheel, pull the seal, and install a new one. You might want to check the cam plug too, they start to leak sometimes.
If it's in the truck, pull the trans and all that stuff, then flywheel, etc.

Thanks for the reply Pete, yeah it is still on the engine stand so it should be easy. I actually went to the autozone web sight. They have a repair instructions area there. They give some pretty detailed instructions on how to do this so I am confident I will be able to change the rear main seal in short order once I aquire parts. I will also plan on doing the KDP before I take it off the engine test stand. Any other preventitive maintenance I should do while it is on the engine stand?

Just check the case bolts by the KDP. Remove and Loctite them, and the cam retainers too. Plenty of posts here about it. Just look it over and fix any leaks you might see.
