HX35 on an 89

Postby Redneckintraining » Fri Jan 09, 2009 11:18 am

So I bought an HX35.It should be here sometime soon.I understand that I need to mod the exhaust and the intake for it to fit.As well as clock the compressor housing. Does anyone have any pics of how they modifified the 89 intake airhorn to fit? Also how do I clock the compressor?I know that "clocking" is just rotating the compressor housing but how is it done?Other than the above any thing else to look out for line oil lines?

thanks in advance.

There is a narrow v-band clamp on the compressor housing that you will loosen to rotate the outlet to match. I think a silicone reducer hump hose could be used. The outlet on the HX35 should be 2.5" while the intake pipe on to the engine is 2" diameter. As far as I know, the oil lines should bolt up OK. I haven't done the swap, so I'm not 100% on the oil lines.

Yes you will need a reducer to go from your crossover to the HX35. You will also need to cut approx 2" off of the crossover and grind the lip off of the compressor housing for the rubber reducer to fit over. You might be able to get the elbow that would go from the compressor to the innercooler piping to work for you but I am unsure because I just ground down the housing.

I think the neighbor stole it and was using it for a weed pipe. ;)

Can't he just take off his exhaust housing and swap it to the hx35. That if he can live with the 18.5 housing :D No exhaust work at least.

that really wouldnt surprise me. at least the crackwhore that lived next to me when my 91 got hit in my driveway by her brother isnt there anymore. that still pisses me off...

about the only one i have to worry about is the guy that had all the cops over. he doesnt drive though. and i havent seen him since he overdosed on vicoden (that was when the cops came).

no, there is not a v-band holding on the compressor housing like on the h1c, there is a giant c-clip thing that you need to squeeze with a big pair of vice grips, it takes some nuts... also the intake of the turbo is an inch bigger than your current, the exhaust, unless you switched the housing, will have to be 100% modified, and welded together... the oil lines i have seen different, but i have seen the same :? so i dont know what to tell you... also, live a little lip on the end of the compressor to allow for the boot not to slip off as easily... i have done two swaps, and this is my experience...

:) it shouldnt be too bad... it should be pretty simple, just try to think ahead when your doing it ;)

I imagine my exhaust housing is chewed up,the compressor is. Only replacing the turbo cause its blown...

I suppose I can see how bad it is though..

The HX-35 I had was a clip, it also had a small roll pin to hold the housing in one place. Pull the clip, remove the compressor housing, and clean the edges. Then you can see if it has a pin, and it will slide better when it's clean.

As far as the exhaust being 100% fabbed up NOT TRUE. It will have to be moved back 1" to 2" and the bracket at the trans moved or scrapped but it is not that big of a deal. I kept the 18cm on my auto truck and really like it but am going to be putting on the 12cm housing soon.

I put a 12cm on my '93 and was able to move the stock exhaust back and keep the bellhousing mount.

As for the oil line, you will need the fitting for the inlet of the HX35. The '89's I have seen don't use one, the turbo is machined for the double flare fitting. The newer ones use a fitting to adapt from SAE o-ring to double flare. It might be robbed from the HX.

the double flare fitting?

What can I do to rectify that?Right now my truck is down because of its blown turbo. So I kinda need to get it going as fast as possible.

Where are you getting the turbo? New? Used?
