ksb solenoid

Postby boomer » Tue Jan 13, 2009 1:56 pm

I have a 1993 dodge 5.9 intercooled....club cab 2w.

My solenoid is leaking pretty heavy....and I'll be having the injection pump replaced soon due to internal failure.

How important is this solenoid...and....is the leak fixable? or does it usually require replacement when leaking?

My concern is that I've heard the solenoid costs 500 bucks....and I am hopeful that during the rebuild....I don't get a nother surprise expense...as the rebuild/reinstall is already costing 2400. OUCH
Thanks guys
John

to my understanding it advances the timing a bit for starting, i think this would be nice to have in cold whether... and it just depends where the leak is whether or not its fixable... i would carefully tinker with it to see if you can get anything accomplished... :)

Why is it costing you $2400 to get your pump rebuilt? You can buy a completely rebuilt one for $800-ish from places like this one: http://www.puredieselpower.com/catalog/90593-1st-gen-12v-cummins-stock-rebuilt-injection-pump-p-207.html.

My truck started leaking from the KSB and it was the tube going into the top of it. I replaced the tube and no more leaking. I think I posted the part numbers somewhere in this forum. I got the pieces from a local Bosch distributor/pump shop. It cost me $40 or so.

And I'm pretty sure it's only an o-ring that seals the KSB to the case. I've yet to hear about a KSB going bad.

I think alot of shops are greedy. Most people do not have a clue ( including me ) how to seal the pumps. They just get into " the diesel stuff is expensive" mentality and screw people. I had a starter shop quote me 1200 for a starter for a excavator I have. Ended up finding one for less then half brand new. Same idea, " its a diesel, thats why its so much".

Isnt a NEW (never been installed on an engine) one around $1500 if you know where to look? I know PDR had them for $12-1300 a few years back, 205s even.

My local Bosch guy said a new one through him runs ~$2000.

wow, 2400, one the main diesel tuner guys in my area happens to be a good family friend. And he charges $450 for a rebuilt VE and that includes labor in and out of your truck, sending the VE to the pump shop completely rebuilt and "supposed" slight tweek.
