I should also note that I know an illumination probe could not be used on the cummins since it only has the injection hole but I have also heard of dynamic timing probes that clamp onto the injector line and sense the injection pulse. This can also be translated into a dynamic timin value.

Also should have noted that the link is talks directly about 2nd gen but the dynamics should be the same, correct?

You determine plunger lift by using a dial indicator adapter and screwing it into the Injection Pump, the VE adapter location is in the center of the Hydraulic Head.

I have asked the timing question on here and several other sites over the last couple years with no answer. Each CPL has a plunger lift spec. that would relate to an amount of timing in degrees, it is not in the Master Manual and nobody has answered that question to date...

It would be interesting to know.

Thanks for the info sdstriper, interesting that this information concerning timing dynamics is not more readily available.

Welcome to the world of diesels, where even the lowliest motor is treated with secrecy the CIA would be jealous of.

sdstriper, I thought that the timing correlation was .1mm per degree, i.e. 1.25mm = 12.5 degrees. Don't anybody quote me on that. Seems to me that KTA and cummins king or somebody had a discussion about this in one of the threads on here.

.1 x 1.25 = .125

Who stated .1mm per degree? Can someone confirm this? KTA or anyone else? I guess the question could be asked again. If your pump plunger lift is set to spec. and your geartrain is on the correct marks. What is the timing in degrees?

I don't know that anybody specifically stated it, it was more of an implied observation. Dang, now I've got to find where I saw that so I can back it up.

Randy,

I would jump a tooth on your timing gear. I would put the pump then at the stock location and then add more to your liking. Mine is jumped a tooth with a similar set up as yours. I may even jump a 2nd tooth next time I pull the truck apart.
