scored cylinder

Postby Redneckintraining » Mon Jan 19, 2009 7:53 pm

It seems that when I was forced to drive my truck with its turbo blown one of the cylinders may have scored. All I know is the truck constantly smokes and idles kinda rough.Any way to fix it?Does that RESTORE stuff work at all?
If I took the truck to have its compression tested would one or two holes most likley be way down?I help a friend out and this is how I get paid...

cummins recommends leak down testing but I personally think if you run a compression test, compare the numbers and find them within 15% of each other that would indicate that the cylinder is at least acceptable. Unless you had to push it hard and egt's went sky high I would not think it to be a cylinder. Although I am only providing my opinion, no experience with "blown" turbo's. Did you look at the turbo to see what if any parts the engine may have ingested. I know from past experience with a 460 ford and a goofy delivery driver who seemed the think pulling the air cleaner off fixed sticking chokes, needless to say this allowed the engine to ingest the air cleaner stud which worked loose, this in turn stuck in the valve. we simply pulled the head removed the stud from between the valve/seat, put it back together and drove it till another goofy driver ran it out of oil. In fact that may be a good check, once you look at the turbo, and if it fails a compression test move on to pulling the valve cover and verify all the rockers are moving appropriately. If not it may be something sticking the valve open.

it seems to have fixed itself.Maybe it just needed to be run abit.it sat for like a month, and it was like 20* in the daytime...

It still smokes faintly at idle though.whitish/grey. I can't really see any blue.Maybe I have an injector that is dribling when it should be closed, or something...

Most blue/ white smoke is fuel related. If it is cold, it will smoke, esp with today's lower quality fuel than in years gone by. Just keep an eye on it for a while.

I have a buddy who bought a 1989 Ford 7.3 new. Along about 1997 (~300k with a 3spd auto and 4.10s), it got to the point it burned a gallon of oil every 40-50mi. NO smoke out the tailpipe, NO leaks.

It seems my worst fear may be realized. It seems a cyclinder is scored.
Driving around town it isnt bad when its warmed up but on the highway it was smoking brown even at full boost climbing hills.Granted its not as bad as the smoke it was making with no turbo, but still. That and it was getting 12 mpg at 65.In town the MPG doesnt seem that bad but on the highway the revs and the load make it apparent. It still seems like it might be fixable by dropping in a new sleeve and some piston rings. What could I expect to get out of by selling it?1989 Dodge W250. 4x4,posi rear end, 3.55, 727 auto, ramcharger bucket seats, towing package,Gooseneck, trailer controller, suface rust if any,CD player, alloy wheels,69,000 miles on the clock, but probally closer to 169K.
