Oil Pressure Spike pls help

Postby IRoss » Tue Feb 10, 2009 9:18 am

What is happening here... the other day during a high boost romp my oil pressure pegged both gauges and then settled to 80 psi for the rest of my driving, about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, fully warmed up and idling it rests at 50 psi...I cant imagine that excess oil pressure is a good thing fo the seals...should I even try to start it here in this cold weather...? What should I check ....thanks

do you have a mechanical gauge or electronic?

Aftermarket one is electrical, sender is on the filter mount..both gauges (this one and stocker) read higher that normal, though...I started t up this morning and it was the same, 80 psi cold and 50 psi hot...

Well I changed the filter and cleaned out the pressure regulating piston over the oil cooler, made a big difference, ,but in my examinations I found metal shavings in the port below the regulating piston..I have'nt deided yet if I want to cut open the old filter and take a look, is this a common spot for filing deposits?

Triple check pressures with a known good gauge.

I hate to say it but: funky oil pressure plus metal shavings = not good.

If it were mine I wouldn't run it until I had checked main and rod bearings.

I hope I'm wrong!

Good Luck IRoss,
