Wow! You are really digging in to it.

Keep us updated with pics. I'll be interested to see how you handle that upper windshield area. I'll have to do mine some time

Good Day,

Then it came time for some bondo and a lot of sanding!

Image

Image

Again i did that for both sides

Here is the passenger side almost complete

then is started to paint. I re rubber guarded the bottom, and im going to prime and paint (i hope) this week.

I have a good spray gun and i'm building a temporary paint both.

I'm going to paint it Red again.

How would you guys recommend me to paint the truck. I was thinking Base coat clear coat, But i think with will show to much of the imperfections. I was thinking more on the lines of Base coat, and a Shine coat, what do you think?

Hey i noticed that you live in Ontario, Where abouts?

Basicly for the roof i cut it out got the grinder to it and wire wheel and i got as much rust as i could out then i painted the inner roof with rust guard paint

Image

Then i lined it up as best as i could and clamped it down and i spot welded it all around.

Image

After i got some seam sealer from Napa and i sealed the seam where the window rubber goes.

Image

The i bondoed the top and sanded it down. It looked really good.

The thing that shows inperfections is darker colors. If you paint poor body work white it still looks pretty good. Paint it black and WOW you can see everything. Basically everything I paint should be white.

I just had a guy come by today and cut the roof off my original cab. His was shot too.
CK, you should have blended the new top into the truck at the pillars, (replace the whole top) instead of where you did. That would have gotten rid of all the rust up there. I hope it doesn't come back on you.
Looks good so far. It should prolong the life of the truck quite a bit.
Keep up the good work! 8)

Mine is white but instead of going back with clear coat and base coat I am going to take it to the metal and shoot it with a good acrylic and use wet look hardener in it with fish eye elemanator. Then when dry buff it out with 1400 paper.

We always used to use Dupont Centari single stage with a hardner performance pack. My dad has started using other stuff now as most centari single stage is gone. He paints and I do everything else. He wants to do base clear on my 93. We will see. :)

Now your truck will deceive people. It used to run as crappy as it looked, but now it will look nice and still run like crap. Just kidding.

Looks pretty good, I hate body work.

Are you going to paint it the same shade of red?

in case anyone doesn't know this yet ... por 15 is your best friend when dealing with rust .

remove the looses rust , apply a couple coats of por 15 , after it's dry scuff it up with a scotchbrite pad and put your primer on top ..... and you are done

even when using a etching primer you are suposed to use por15 first since it sticks to oxided metal much better .

I used por 15 on my frame for my 93. They said it was so hard after it cured a needle gun would not chip it. WRONG! It just comes off in sheets when it does come off. I used all there cleaners, acids. I am on the fence. I want to see how it holds up over time.

Personally I don't think single stage paints are any easier to work with than base clear. If you want a single stage, I'd suggest a urethane and spray as many coats as the spec sheet says. You want some thickness in case you need to wet sand and buff it, but to thick and it won't cure right. You can clear over most single stage paints too, but there is more prep work. If you think you might have to buff it, stay away from any metal flake paint. When you get all set to paint, spray some scrap metal to dial yourself in with whatever paint you're using.

Where did you get your patch panels? Are they close to the same thickness as the factory metal? How's the fit?
