VE Tech Paper (25 degrees of timing advance???)

Postby VMacKenzie » Sat Mar 07, 2009 8:24 pm

This is a good read: http://www.dieselbookmarks.com/bombers/VEPump.pdf

The thing that jumped out at me is the injection timing advance range is 25 degrees if I read it right, WOW  I'm guessing that varies by application, 25 degrees is probably for a lil' v-dub engine that hits 5000 RPM. After reading this paper I finally have a pretty clear understanding how the mechanical advance works, and I bet someone could modify it so you could extend the throw of the timing advance piston for greater timing range, and mess with the spring to get the ideal curve. That way those running governor springs could have timing continue to advance further as RPM rises above the original governor RPM.

Looks like the KSB advance is about 5 degrees at lower RPM.

Also it mentioned an atmospheric-based fuel control for reduced fueling at higher elevations, wonder if this is on the Cummins application?

Not to bust your chops but that is a 94/95' printing and there is a 99' floating around out there somewheres... Nothing changed from what I can see! ;)

I have issues with the functioning of my timing advance under certain conditions. Someday I will fix it so it works how I want. Another project for the ages. lol Wish I had Gale Banks time and resources I could really do some good!!

hey KTA
Would the timing advance fixes posted on many VW sites be of any use to you?
they sound very simple to do - gonna be tryin a couple of them shortly

allowing more advance and longer - removing some shims, and opening up the side cover

sdstriper I didn't know there was a newer writeup. . . is it more specific to the Cummins VE? I'm kind of an outsider with a 2nd Gen so this is all a bit foreign to me. I've been wanting to learn more about the humble VE which I'm thinking has some notable advantages over the almighty P-pump :P

It's pretty much the same, but I have only browsed this one you posted... My guess is a newer publishing date with minor changes if any.
