Motor timing marks

Postby seeker1056 » Sun Mar 29, 2009 3:20 pm

Ok so the motor is torn down to the gear case

Only timing mark on any gear I can find is the one on the cam gear that also coincides with the timing pin.

Lots od various numbers and letters but nothing that looks liek a timing mark.
Keyway on the crank appears to be striaght up when the timing pin is in place, but that is rather a wide reference for a timing mark.

So how does one set up the gears when removing the cam etc so they are in proper time with the crank.

Or is it like i have to punch some marks in the various gears before i remove the cam gear etc so I know the proper reference for reasemmbly?

I have a new fluidampr and also plan to do the timing check with the wire pointer and stop, etc, for top dead centre, to verify exact TDC, and also so I can degree in the cam if necessary.

thanx

There should be a mark on the crank gear. IIRC, 1 dot, 2 on the cam.
The IP gear has letters on it. The letters are the timing marks. The gear is used on all b series engines, so there are 4 possible marks to time it to. 4b, 4bt, 6b, 6bt. I can't remember which is which, I'd have to look in the book at work.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

so with three letters, I am to use the centre one as the timing mark?

found the zeros on the crank and cam gear

pump gear markings are as follows

FBA - 7 oclock
01 - 4 oclock
39149212 - 3 oclock
backwards K 003 - 9 oclock
D EC - 1:10 oclock

keyway straight up

Cam gear, and timing pin mark is at 6:32 oclock or so

Is it possible the FBA marks are the timing marks - there is nothing else within inches of the timing pin mark and the FBA is like three quarters of an inch away

Someone has had this motor apart, various new gaskets, and missing nuts and bolts, and I suspect never got it running again, and is how I got it cheap. probably because it was out of time on the pump

I suspect so cuz one pump mounting nut was missing and the nut and washer for the pump gear is MIA

So anyone got a nut and washer they wish to sell or donate? ( I can just imagine the mess if this thing has started without that nut on the gear and the gear came off at speed)
