Blown headgaskets?

Postby JQmile » Wed Apr 08, 2009 10:39 pm

Who's blown their stock ones? Boost? Power levels? Re-torques?
Just curious....adding some more nitrous to it and wondering how it'll hold....

I've blown 3 so far, the original, one stock thickness, and one .020 overthick gasket. They usually last about a year at 50+ psi boost levels with new stock bolts torked to 130

I had mine fail on my non i/c motor and leak externally. the non i/c motors had a crappy head gasket from the factory, they improved it when they switched to intercooled. Ive only changed 4 but from what Ive seen the 17-18 year old non i/c could go anytime. might as well push it becuase your due !!

I popped the stocker at 50lbs and it filled the cooling system full of oil. The .020 torqed to 130 let go at 60 with some nitrous. A .020 with orings and a-1 studs lasted till I sold the truck and it now has twins with 80lb of boost and its still goin strong.

I've blown three since October. My problems are due to pushing 40 pounds of boost on a cold engine though. I didn't realize until the third one blew, that what I was doing was causing the failures :bh: The first gasket that blew was whatever was in the truck when I bought it, I had retorqued the head bolts to 125# before it blew. The second one was a stock gasket, and I replaced all the head bolts when I put it in and torqued to 125#. After that one blew I had the head surfaced and installed a .020 gasket, torqued to 125#, it blew. I'm now running a stock gasket again, and had the head surfaced again, and the bolts are at 125#, but know I don't get on the throttle until the engine is up to temp.

I blew the HG in a nonIC 91 with 250K showing (who knows actual). Drove it 10k before figuring out what it was- oil and water were staying seperated.

Replaced a 93 HG due to the #1 coolant "nuisance leak" of a gallon of coolant a week.

I just blew my stock one by putting 6x18's in and "testing" them on a cold gasket. Dunno how much boost I was throwin but I have the stock turbo so it got purty hot. Now I got ARP studs and the .020 h/g so I should be safe.

mine went a couple weeks ago, pretty cool since it was replaced about 60k ago, has only boosted to 32psi a couple times and was a bone stock power for about 50k. It was a felpro, now it has the thick marine one. Im hoping i get a couple hundred out of it, my truck is pretty mild.

My 90 lost the headgasket at around 450,000 miles. The max boost it had seen at the time was probably 20-ish (wasn't turned up yet). No retorques that I know of.

Here are some pics of mine. Right between 4 and 5. Looks like a few others were ready to go too.
