Puff of black smoke on startup

Postby ontos » Fri Apr 10, 2009 12:52 pm

Just finished installing an intercooler on my Non I/C 1st gen.

Runs fine once I got all the tubes tight. When I start it there is a short puff of black smoke. Is this a problem?

It also takes a while longer to warm up (40's today) with white smoke but none when it warms up.
I expected to loose some boost but not sure yet.
Thanks any info or opinions.

The little puff is normal on start up. If i remember correctly I think teh VE pump shows full throttle until about 300rpm.

That little puff is perfectly normal. Once you turn the power up that little puff get bigger.

Thanks, never had it before I added the I/C so I thought I'd check.

It's been turned up for a while, in fact I had turned it back a bit. See how it goes with the I/C.
Thanks again

I added an intercooler to my truck, after it was on it seemed like there was more smoke off idle. I guessed it was because the intercooler and piping added a small amount of turbo lag that wasn't there before.

That make sense, and my piping is a little longer than the pickup deal plus the cold outside temps all add to the effect.

Thanks.
