This same thing happened to me. It was quite wiered but here is what I had figured out. My timing was retarded all the way back and when I tried to bleed it I was pumping extra fuel into the cylinders and it slowed down the starter just enough to not make a speedy enough turn to build enough pressure before it either bypassed at the plunger or something I dont know.

Finally after screwing around for a couple of days I thought what the hell advanced timing all the way to the head after I came up with this theory and by the time it got one rotation with #1 cracked at the injector the truck was running and spewing fuel like crazy. But it started.

That is my only theory and it makes sense in your case since it started with ether. A kind of run down battery or one that has been cranked on for a while and the timing was a little too retarded and that is all it took for me to not get good injctor pressure. I also had a lot of air coming out when I would crack the lines and it seemed like they would not bleed.

A year to date from when I rebuilt my pump and put new injectors and it is still running like a champ. You should bump timing anyway it makes for a lot better running rig. Im all the way to the head as advanced as I can and it run awesome.
