Fuel pickup upgrades

Postby CAROLINA CUMMINS » Sat Apr 11, 2009 8:00 pm

Hey guys,

I have been researching upgrading my fuel system, and the main concern I have is the pickup, pretty sure I will go with either a draw straw or a bulkhead fitting/sump in the bottom of the tank. I am curious how much these affect fuel pickup when the tank is run low, which I seldom run mine below 1/4 tank anyway. Using a draw straw or a bulkhead fitting either one is cost effective, I just want it to work good, I also found this over on CompD; pretty sweet, but kinda $$$

I recall seeing a thread that someone drilled out the passages in the head for the fuel filter, I cannot find it again?? Not sure if I saw it here or another forum?

Thanks, Steven

I like that tank sump idea. That's what I'll do if I ever need more fuel.

The pickup and filter are the big restrictions. You can mod that stuff for minimal cost and get enough fuel for some pretty serious HP with a piston pump and bigger lines.

PM'd ya on the pickup tube skillet. thanks

Another question, if I install a inline fuel filter/strainer does it have to be diesel rated, one rated for gasoline and alcohol should work right? Most of the decent ones(as in affordable) are -8an in/out 40-100 microns, around 100-150 gph. For some reason the diesel rated ones are $100 +

Thanks, Steven

If you are talking about bypassing or eliminating the stock filter then yes, it should be for diesel with a water seperator, rated for 10um max. Any water and junk bigger than that getting through the filter will wipe out the VE and injectors pretty quick.
