Your throttle lever is indexed wrong, sounds to me like.

Double check the throttle shaft is in right. The lever should be towards the engine, not the fender. Sounds like it is bass ackwards and when you step on it you're cutting off the fuel.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I did my friends truck and all went fine. Feeling pretty confident so I opened mine up and did mine. When I touched the gas, it died. Freaked me out. "Oh crap there goes my work truck".... Could have sworn I got throttle indexed right, but I must have gotten it off some. Took it all apart and put it back together and it was fine. Still scared me though.

If you think that's scary, wait till you have to shut one down with a board/book/clipboard/service manual over the turbo charger, because it ran away! You were prepared for that too, right? Whenever a governor is taken apart, I pull the air filters so I can cut off the air to the engine, and I try and have another person around so it can be cut off immediatly, instead of having to run from the ignition swith to the turbo.

Why not use the shutoff on the side of the pump?

In a runaway situation, because of a governor failure, usually shut off devices on the pump do not work.

Oh yeah, any time I adjust the fuel screw or messed with the governor, I had second person with 2x8 ready to choke it off.
