Timing advance

Postby fourwheelininajeep » Wed May 27, 2009 10:33 am

I have bumped the timing all the way to the head and like it but I have seriously considered taking off timing cover and jumping a tooth. Would this be a good idea for a dd that I use to pull 10000 pounds mainly in the summer. I see high egts and want to try and get them down with still improving fuel mileage and power. The way I understand it more advanced on timing the more high end power and boost but lower egts and is this a good idea if reliability is improtant?

Towing and more then an 1/8 inch timing increase is not a great thing. If you lug the motor it could crack the pistions. Keep the revs up and I guess its ok.

You don't say what other mods are done to the truck. From the sounds of it, an Intercooler should be the next thing you do, then an upgraded turbo.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I would say put a dial indicator on it and time it to 1.4-1.6mm, maybe 1.7mm, but no more. If you are having EGT issues, I'd agree with Pete, an intercooler and/or turbo upgrade is the next step. Too much timing will do the same thing as too little timing- poor MPG, poor performance, along with increased cylinder pressures.

For what it's worth, I had a nonIC 91 with a PDR HX35 that I towed with a couple times, and as long as I kept the RPMs up and my foot out of it (no flooring it at 50 up a hill to see how low an RPM I'd peg the boost gauge), EGTs werent bad.
