o-ring mess... what to do?

Postby Micaiahfied » Wed Jul 15, 2009 3:26 pm

So I took a spare 7mm head to a local machine shop to have it reconditioned and o-rings cut. I told them I wanted it cut for .041 wire with .010 protrusion. When I came to pick it up he told me there was a slight problem while doing it but "no big deal". He showed me the head and the first 3 cylinders has the .041 wire in it and the last three had " about .052 guitar string" I really didn't know what to say but I wasn't happy. The protrusion was also obviously different. The larger wire was sticking out much farther. I didn't try to measure anything... so here is where I don't know what to do. He offered to cut the other three to match so they are all the same... even if he replaced it with solid wire can I trust it? I have been told to go and tell him that he screwed up the head and needs to come up with another one and do it right.. What do you guys think? I really DON'T want to do the head work twice on the truck!

I think you better find out who is in charge there and get a guaranteed good head in exchange for that bullitsh workmanship. And then go find a shop to do the o-ring correctly. Unreal...

Thy would be finding me a new head, giving me back my money and they sure as hell would not be allowed to even think of doing the work on it.

That sounds like a CompD-type of question to me.

Just hope that it is answered in the first five replies before the thread is derailed into nonsense about Banks, bacon and (as of last week) Don Tanklage.

Your original machine shop definitely owes you something. But my experience with machine shops is not so promising...

You might want to carry a big stick and/or get a lawyer... Or use a big stick and get a lawyer

you didn't pay them yet , did you ? ......if you did demand your money back .

AND they owe you a head , they did not do what you asked of them . the fault is theirs .

if they don't return your money , and replace your head , file a claim in small claims court .

i'd also talk to a lawyer about seeing what other " damages" you can add to make what they will have to payout much much larger if they are not willing to settle this outside of court .

I wouldn't get a lawyer involved over a $200 head.

Used heads can.

To do it right you're looking and spending money on valve seats and resurfacing on most used heads, though.

I'd advise against getting a lawyer. Most likely the lawyer is a beer drinking buddy of the judge, and it I just dont see how it could turn out good for anyone. You'd spend more time and money that it's worth, one or the other lawyer would continue the case til you croak, etc, etc. Not to mention under-the-bench money that can change hands.........

Jim Fulmer on COMPD runs .051 with 18 thou protrusion, at ~850whp and has done so for a long time. As I understand it this head was done, long before .41 and 10-12 thou had become the standard. He said really the only difference is that you have to do a couple more torque sets, to get them to seat properly.

At this point, unless you have more then 20thou protrusion on the ones already done, I would just have them do the rest of them, and make sure you get a REALLY good deal on it.
