Weeping weephole on the steering box

Postby Begle1 » Thu Aug 06, 2009 9:26 pm

Does fluid leaking out of what appears to be a weephole at the bottom back of my steering box indicate that I need a whole new steering box or can I repair the old one easy enough?

Thanks. I'm on vacation.

no such thing as a stupid question .....

is it just leaking fluid , or is it causing issues with how the truck steers ?

i've driven many dodges swith leaking steering boxs for years , with doing nothing more than topping up the fluid .

Well, it is Begle!
It was the weephole thing that threw me. I've never seen a weephole in these boxes. Mine was leaking for years too, and I just put oil in. I knew the input shaft was pitted from rust, I tried to reseal years ago and it lasted a month. This time I used the input assembly from the donor truck and it quit leaking.
Oh, and if your steering feels real loose, tighten the input assembly (or whatever it's called) just a little bit, it will make a big difference. ;)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

the weephole thing threw me too ........

but it is a dodge and i figured it might be a throw back to the m37 .....

in the several of the canadian and american military maintenance manuals it instructs mechanics as a shortcut to checking all the fluid levels in the truck , instead drive the truck till it's warm then count the " drips " per minute to estimate the various fluid levels .
