Piston Lift Pump Questions

Postby Dragon Dually » Mon Aug 10, 2009 5:15 pm

I'm new here, so take it easy on me. I've tried searching, and haven't really found the anwer I'm looking for.

What exactly is needed to put a piston lift pump in one of these trucks? I know I need the low pressure version, but other than that, I don't know. As I understand it, the stock lift pump is not adequate for even a stock truck, which is why I want to upgrade as soon as possible.

Another thing I have been wanting to do is a BHAF. I've seen them with and without heat shields, or the "Old Smokey" mount, so is it really needed or not? What materials would I need to buy to put the filter on my truck?

As a little background, I've owned this truck since it late '91. I'm the original owner, and it has been a 100% reliable, good truck. I've decided to retire her from the farm work, as there doesn't seem to be many of these old trucks in good shape now. I recent;y bought a 1997 Ram 3500 5spd, Cummins to replace my '92 as the farm truck. My '92 will now be my daily driver and toy.

Thanks for the help, I'm sure I'll be asking for a lot more help as time goes by.
'92, 5spd, 4wd, Extended Cab, W350. Stock as the day I bought her.

Here's a picture I stole from another site. All the parts you need are seen in this picture, you can get these parts from your local cummins dealer, or I'm told you can get them cheaper from a case dealer. This is a mod that I feel is definitely worth the effort, I gained top end power and improved fuel mileage from doing this to my truck. With a stock truck I don't know how much you will gain, but as soon as you start adding power this will be needed.

That picture is going in the collection. Very helpful, thank you.

I said I stole it. Don't give me someone else's credit, whoever took the original did a very good job. 8)

I know you stole it, but I was just thanking you for posting the picture. :D

Thanks David, for a very helpful picture. With your permission, I'll do what Gearjammer has done, and give anyone else the information if they need it. (I'll do it without your permission too  )

Now you just need to edit it and put the prices by the part number. :D

Looks like I'll be doing this pretty soon. A guy on DTR made some piston pump spacers, and is giving them away for free. Mine is in the mail.

Thanks again David.

I was on the list for 2 of those spacers but he said he has not tried them yet to see if it will fit. You better check the depth as well to make sure it will put the pump where it is supposed to be. To close and crunch, to far and not enough stroke. It was real cool of him to make them and give them away. I am sure they will work fine, just double check.

I don't even have the pump yet, I just got the spacer for down the road, when I do the conversion. You can't beat free either. :D

I'll definitely keep that in mind though Richie, thanks.

I'm glad some of the things I've done are helpful. :D

But seriously, that pump shown was a good one. I think it's out on the porch in pieces (not ruint, just apart). :?

I went to a friends junk collection today and grabbed a 2nd gen LP just for fun. I plan on using a new LPLP, but is the fuel strainer worth using with the new setup? it would eliminate the need for the spacer and strain the big stuff. would it work?

NONONONO! It's just another leak waiting to happen. The quad ring, (square o-ring) dries out and lets in air, but doesn't leak fuel out. Makes for hard starting and hair tearing troubleshooting. I think my new truck has this problem. You can use it, but IMO it's just another agravation. ;)

Pete, I tore it all apart and Im not sure that we have the same thing. Or maybe we are talking about different things. It may not even be off of a 2nd gen engine, it could be off some ag.engine. My friend has several 5.9 blocks laying around and that was on one of them. It appears to be nothing more than a filter head with a fuel strainer and a fuel heater. I have it all apart and cleaned and I can delete the fuel heater and screw the strainer housing back onto the filter head. There were no o-rings anywhere in the whole thing. I am not disagreeing with you, just trying to get clarification. I think it could be a benefit to have a fuel strainer in conjunction with the filter.

Well, I could be wrong. It happened once before, but I can't remember when.
There's no o-ring between the strainer head and heater? There must be something to seal it. There should be something on the bowl too. I had the bowl off the old service truck I drove, but that was a few years ago. I can't remember exactly what there was, and I didn't mess with the heater.
On my funny round truck, I couldn't even find the damn thing. That'll be a real joy to check. :x
