A/C issues- suddenly losing freon

Postby dpuckett » Wed Aug 12, 2009 12:37 pm

My W350 had a full system charge last summer when I took it to shoeing school. Froze us out on 90+ deg days, and was just great. I split a brake line in Aug, and took my 2wd and let the 4x4 sit til next time I came home (about a month). NO AC. OH well, winter was coming on, and I would just get it figured out next summer. Next summer is here, and I refilled it with some 134A I had on hand, and put in some leak detector dye. Have not found a leak yet. It will work fine for a while, then suddenly, it will have no charge- I mean, freezing me out waiting in line to get out of the rodeo FRI nite, then Monday, boom, nothing but 100* air. I've been filling it to ~30psi or so at idle, and it seems to do well there. Why am I losing my refrigerant all at once? The only thing I can think of is a restriction somewhere along the way, and the compressor compresses too much and the blowoff valve lets go. This is the second time it's happened to me in the last 2 months, and I am tired of not having dependable AC. Tme to toughen up, I guess.

wash everything really really well , top and from the bottom , then add more dye .... in a couple days go over your truck with a black light to find where it's leaking .
