Low idle/dies when coming to a stop

Postby AlexT » Tue Aug 25, 2009 5:14 pm

I'm new to this site. Just recently bought a '91 intercooled 4x4 automatic. This is my first diesel and I love it. The truck is pretty high mileage (500,000) but is extremely clean and runs decent. There are a few bugs I need to work out though. One thing is when I'm slowing to a stop, the truck almost dies. The idle drops down REALLY low and falls on it's face. Any ideas ?
Also, when it warms up, the truck seems to be running one cylinder short.... I think I'm gonna pull out the injectors and have them pop tested. Any input you guys can provide would be great! I look forward to many hours spent on this website.

How does it idle when it's warm? I'd try and bump the idle a little bit and see if it helps. It should be around 800RPM in neutral.

Very erratic when it's warm. Like it's down a cylinder. I'll have to take a look at the numbers and get back to you. Thanks

Pop testing the injectors is a good place to start.

Off topic, but Gunmetal, is the avatar picture your truck? If so, do you have a bigger picture of it? She looks good from what I can see. ;)

In my experience ( limited ) a dirty fuel filter effects top end performance not bottom end. I have had many times when my filter was gelled and the truck would idle fine but die with throttle. I also have had lift pumps fail in my 3406's and you lose top end first. How come nobody has mentioned that when the injection pumps get weak they drop rpm's at idle. ;)

I used the same image to make the header at 12valve.com
That's my site. I will have a review on the old smokey fuel pin up there for people to read, possibly a video if I feel energetic.

Other than that chunk 'O fender missing, she looks real good. I kind of like the bumper painted the same color as the truck.

Thanks for the picture. 8)
