1st Gens and 2 Cycle Oil

Postby darestie » Wed Aug 05, 2009 2:45 pm

I was reading somewhere on another forum about adding 2 cycle oil to diesel as opposed to over the counter additives. Someone wrote that while latter model cummins may have problems with it, 1st gens seemed to like it. Has any one had a bad experience with 2 cycle and a 1st gen? It seems like a VE type pump would probably benefit from the added lubrication, but i'm worried mainly about carbon buildup. It seems to be a controversial subject on most general diesel forums, is it the same for 1st gens?

I believe Ace runs it in both his 1st and 3rd gen and has no problems at all. Don't want to speak for him though.

I know a lot of guys run things through these 1st Gen's, and as log as it's filtered properly, they usually have no problems.

It's good for the injectors and the injection pump. I think it's even better in the commonrail, noticed more of difference in the way the engine ran smoother and quieter on that one. I use mostly waste oil, ATF, whatever. In fact as I recall, the only reason I even started using the 2-stroke stuff was because in the comonrail I was afraid to use the WMO in it at first. Then I started mixing in the WMO, and last year sometime decided to just use the same mix in both to avoid confusion.

I have a somewhat elaborate filtering setup, but I think you could get away without even filtering it as long as you give it a good long time (weeks) to settle out and pour carefully off the top leaving the sludge in the bottom of the jug. I may eliminate the 2-stroke altogether again at some point if my backlog of WMO goes up much more.

The only problem with my situation in this regard is I probably don't put enough miles on them to draw any long-term conclusions at this point.

I've been running about 16 oz. of two stroke oil in every tank since I bought my truck. I've put about 40,000 miles on it since then with no issues. I also gain about 1.5 MPG with the two stroke. I see no bad sides to running it.

IowaCummins- I had the same results as you when I tried some 2 stroke for a while. I have since found some Schaeffer's diesel additive that is heavy on the lubricity (independent lab research, not just what's written on the label), and I can tell when I skip a tank or two.

i run it in mine cause i have heard the same things about the ve liking it, and it did run smoother upon use, i run an ounce to a gallon, and that does good:) just make sure its tcw-3, that is for the outboard style motors and is a higher grade than the chainsaw weed eater grade

What he said. No problems here either.

I found a funnel at Walmart that has a valve on it and a measuring cup so I can pour the oil in the measuring cup while my fuel is pumping and then turn the valve to drain it out and it has a nifty little filter on it too. Has like a foot-long hose at the end of it. Pretty convenient. That way I can buy a gallon at a time.

My brother bought one of those funnels from wal mart but he used it for a beer bong. He said it'll fit two beers if filled to the brim

Maybe ill have to steal it from him for mixing 2stroke oil with fuel.... like he'll believe that.

i would put the oil in first, and fuel on top of it so it mixes to some degree instead of sitting on top of the fuel. i dont measure, i just dump some in and fuel up. some is better than none, right?

When I run regular WMO in the '93 , seems to mix and burn just fine, don't notice it. But, when I drop a gallon or 2 of synthetic WMO in it , it seems to take a bit to get to it and then it smokes like crazy for 3 or 4 tanks... with nothing else but fuel added to the tank. Any ideas ??

No idea. I haven't used anything but full synthetic or grpIII-based semi-syns for at least the last ten years. But I don't dose it that high either - around 60-1, of a half gallon per tank. I never noticed any difference in smoke levels from the WMO I use in either of the trucks, a 1st Gen and an '07 commonrail. But it's been so long since I ran straight #2 I honestly don't really remember either.
