Its been a while its been down and its still not back together all the way but gettin closer. got the head home, its ported, fireringed and had a fresh valve grind. new head studs. also got some new rims and tires for the truck. and 4" TB exh. hopefully within the next week or so i'll have her runnin again.

So. Question from the newbie. Do you have a picture of the fire rings that go in there? I assume its just copper?? Also is there any special head gasket to go along with them or does it fit on the edge?? I have never laid my eyes on a ring set up before.

His may be different but all the ones I have seen are steel rings that just drop into the groove. It looks like they may be in the bag sitting beside the head in one of his pics. As far as the gasket goes it is probably just a std stock gasket. The ring is just designed to put presure on the area of the gasket around the cylinder just to keep it from blowing out. Typically the only time you use a special gasket is when you fire ring the block/head because then the ring is installed in the either the head or block and then when assembled sits into a groove in the opposite component so then the gasket needs to allow for that. Essentially when assembled the ring is sitting in both the head and block creating a barrier that the cylinders compression cant get past. Make any sense?

well fergavs your right and wrong. it is just a steel ring that centers in the groove and it is a stock head gasket but the fire ring on the gasket is cut out with a water jet machine so the new steel ring fits in there and presses on the block. i'll get some pics up as soon as i can prolly later tonight or tomorrow.

oh sorry fergavs. i shoulda read your whole post before commenting. you can still use the "special" gasket the way im doin it but it will not hold as much boost as cuttin the head and block. mine with studs should hold about 70-80 lbs from what i've heard and if you do both it will hold up to about 110lbs. if you go to 14mm head studs obviously it will hold more.

I wonder how many people are using a cut gasket vs a stock gasket when running rings. It would be interesting to know of the people with rings how many have blown head gaskets still and of those which style gasket. Who supplied you with the laser cut gasket? I have always just used a stock gasket on my truck, I've never tried a cut one.

oh and if nobody noticed, yes there is only 11 rockers there in the first pic. thats what im waiting on. i'll get a pic up of the old rocker and what happens when the previous owners never do a valve adjustment.

well i got it runnin tonight. it felt so good. although stupid me did the 366 spring while it was down and when i took the throttle off i didnt mark it :dayum:

so i have to hold full throttle to get it to idle so tomorrow in the day light im gonna mess around and try and get it right. my question though is, which way should i go, clock wise, counter clockwise, and is there a almost there not quite or is it either right or wrong? thanks for any info.

Turn the shaft counter clockwise and put the lever on. Be careful, if you go too far at once it may wind up pretty good.
