My new fuel system

Postby ZSkibo » Thu Sep 24, 2009 7:02 pm

Thought I'd share a little...It consists of a Vulcan I drawstraw (1/2") to 1/2" lines front to back. Fed by a high pressure 2nd gen piston pump and regulated by a boost-referenced bypass regulator. I have 15psi from idle to WOT and the boost-reference keeps it there all the way through. What did I gain? It's not a seat of "the pants" performance increase but she pulls strong all the way through now from off-idle to max rpm (3200) and there is no more of that running lean feeling I had in the higher RPMs. Overall, I'm glad I did it this way as I kept my mechanical pump (no electrics to fail), have the boost reference, and I know my VE is getting fed and cooled.

What brand of regulator did you use, would you happen to have the part number?

Good work. :salut: Should be a 400hp fuel supply for sure. Which Draw Straw did you use? Have you run the tank down low (less than 1/4 tank) to see how it does? It seems like people have problems with low fuel levels. I saw that Vulcan has a new Draw Straw (the V), that is supposed to not have the low fuel level issues, but it's meant to be used with the 3rd gen tank setup.

I think I would do a helman sump if I ever need more fuel.

you pic shows no boost line to the afc anymore - how do you get the fuel pin to work?

Oh yeah that....um, it's hanging from my rearview in case I ever want to put it back in. Trouble is, I can't imagine why I'd want to... 8)

just bought the piston pump for my truck today being in college i couldent go myself so my father went because he needed freeze plugs for his 24 valve .... after repedely telling him to ask for the 15 psi pump and giving him all sorts of part numbers he comes back with the 30 psi pump ...i guess im gona do the same thing and use a pressure regulator think one without a boost reference will work ok?

Yep

The boost reference is not a requirement. It just maintains your preset pressure under heavier loads. You'll probably never notice the difference.

ok thanks , i went to install the pump today and i found 2 things the angle of the contact pad on the piston pump looked very low lilke the rod was pointing to the bottom of the cam... i was wondering if that is correct and what did you do with the insulation around the breather pipe just above the casting for the pump? ive heard of people cutting it out is that what u did?

Regulators aside, the "best" way to maintain fuel pressure is simply install adequate plumbing, i.e. at least 3/8" supply I.D. from the pickup all the way to the injection pump. Do that, and a 15psi piston pump will maintain 15psi at WOT under load up to some abnormally high flowing injector/VE combo.
