Another low idle deal!

Postby PToombs » Sat Sep 26, 2009 5:28 pm

Well, my truck did it too. I drove it most of the week, and friday morning when I came out and started it up it idled at 500. Once it was warm it came up to 800 where it usually is. I didn't change anything, no new fuel, nothing different. Was the same way when I left work to go home, and when I started it this morning, same thing. I turned on my valet switch, which has the KSB wired in, and it didn't make any difference.
Any bright ideas why it suddenly did this?

How cold has it been getting at night? Maybe got some bio mixed in there, and it started to gel if the temps got low enough. It has been a cool summer here (only a handful of days topped 90 here, as opposed to a handful of weeks doing that).

How has it been running when cold? Sluggish, or more normal? My nonIC 91 did the low idle thing, but still had original pump springs after 400K mi.

Joe, I have one. I think it's in the toolbox some place. ;)
I think it was about 50*. But it was near 70 when I left work and it did the same thing. I did dump in some motor oil mix the day before it acted up. I wondered if that could be it. Cold it runs the same as usual, just idles low.

Well I got water and dirt out of the filters so I got new filters on the way for the ad. I got an idel when I fire her up and tap the throttle but if I don't it won't stay runnin with 14psi of fuel pressure so I'm thinkin its the filters any input?

Where is the guage tapped in? After the filters? If so, you have another problem. If the filters are plugged, the guage would read low.

I changed my filter a week before mine acted up, so I know that's good.

Might be a good time to run an external fuel supply directly to the IP, just to try and isolate the problem a little more.

If you do, make sure the fuel is clean. Put an cheapy inline filter in the fuel line.

Don't forget to break into the return line someplace an be sure that it is ok too.

It would be best to have the return line unhooked at the IP so that the IP is completely isolated from the trucks fuel system.
