loud banging.

Postby Swaggs » Wed Aug 05, 2009 10:24 pm

So, I think my rear end (d70) is screwed up, taking a turn it drags a tire for a second and then bangs and its not dragging anymore, and now it will bang and kinda slip under acceleration.. i dont know.. I havent checked the fluid in awhile, maybe i should...
any ideas?

Do you have a limited slip or open differential?

Could need some oil too. Sounds like it's too late for either. Better check it ASAP, maybe you can save some of it.

Based on my experiences with Mom's 92 when I owned it, the clutches in the LS have no friction material left, are down to steel-on-steel, and have basically turned the differential into a spool. Dont drive it til you get it figured out. You may get lucky and just need bearings and LS clutches. Be sure to clean out the housing SUPER well, then clean it out twice more after that.

alright, yea it has been sitting for a few days... I miss it tho. how it first started was letting off the clutch in making a left turn.. just sounded like a pop.. pretty jarring.. then it started to do it more frequently, and now if it has steady power it wont do it, but if i let off the throttle, then when i give it some, it will slip, or pop.. its getting worse. also, especially bad in reverse. pretty annoying.

oh, and sorry I posted this in the wrong section. I looked fast, at the catagories, and saw (everything but drivetrain) but my eye just caught 'drivetrain' and posted it here.
anyways. thanks for the imput.. one of these days I am going to tear into the rear end, also a good time to change out my u-joints.. it is in terrible need of... well all of them, probably..

well, i finally have time, the wedding and honeymoon are over. The spider and side gears are done, ground down to about 50% pretty strange. one of the LS clutches was broken in half also.
300 bucks and I have new everything on the way. anyone have this problem? What do you think causes that sort of thing? I am thinking like every other part of the truck, it hasnt been maintained properly. I am also changing out the rear rotors, shoes, cylinders and springs... and does anyone know what u joints go in the front shaft? The parts store guy has had my shaft a day or so and cant figure out what is going on.. thats the update. thanks

Congrats on the marriage and honeymoon.

If the parts store guy HAS your driveshaft and cant figure out the u-joint that it needs, find another store. Hint- if it has "ZONE" in the name, run away.

I cannot stress this enough. GET IT CLEAN!!!!! I used a steel bore brush to clean my housing. I sloshed a liberal amount of gasoline in the housing, dipped the brush, then ran it ONE WAY. That way, you flush the shavings to the center or outside. I'd recommend going toward the center- cant hang up on the neck down at the spindle. After that, it's nozzle time with the water hose and dish soap. Pressure washer with a short wand would be nice, but I didnt have one. RINSE the water out, then swab it with a paper towel on the end of a stick/ rod. If there is ONE spec of shiny stuff, wash it out again. You dont want that stuff getting in your bearings again.

As for the cause, it was probably lack of maintenance, or a naieve owner/ incompetent shop who didnt put in the correct friction modifier, or not enough of it. In my experience, even with Mobil1 synthetic, 2 tubes of Mopar modifier is necessary.

Good luck.

well that was a fun nightmare.. did my spider and side gears, ls clutches, rear brake lines, brake hose, drums, shoes, springs, and parking brake cables. i am loving how my truck stops.
i also had to put a new battery in there after it sat so long. it is difficult rounding up all the right parts for our big trucks..
I also took out the transfer case skid plate.. ?I never really off-road with it, and i hate the way it looks.. i dont know if its a good idea or not. anyways..

Here is the #1 way I see dana limited slips destroyed like you describe.
Put miss matched tires on it.
I see all the time someone replace one tire, or rotate tires so old fronts end up mixed with old backs, or run diffrent air pressures in them.
If there is a slight diameter difference in the two back tires then the limited slip is slipping and wearing itself away the entire time you are driving down the road.
