Help! Name this knock. (Videos)

Postby Darren A » Thu Oct 22, 2009 3:46 pm

It sounds like someones in my engine with a hammer.

The knock goes away when I crack the #6 injector line. I got the injector cleaned and popped, that didn't make a difference.

It's been doing it since ive bought it, can't figure it out.

See if you can hear it in these videos. Any clues?

I've had a couple of people tell me they don't hear anything but others will notice it right away. It never used to bother me but it has lately.

there's soething there , i would have to hear the truck in person to verify it though .......

my vw diesel makes a similar knocking noise ( it has a ve pump too ) .

the noise gets worse when the idle is lower , and when the fuel stations switch to #1 diesel .

it tends to go away with a slightly higher idle , and or when i add 2 or 3 litres of 2 stroke oil to the fuel .

for the most part i have ignored it for the last 3 years the car has great power and even better fuel millage , to i put up with how annoying it can be at idle .

something i was told by a old diesel mechanic years ago .....
DON'T worry about all the weird noise the engine may make , if you do it will drive you nuts .

The guy I bought the truck from said he did them, which concerns me. LOL. I don't believe its a valvetrain noise because the sound goes away when I crack #6.

Trade holes with a diffrent injector, i definatly hear it in the first video, the idle sounds a little low to me, will it stop if you bump up the idle alittle.

Not saying this is how it is with YOURS, but if you have a "funny knocking noise" like that in a gasser and it goes away when you pull a plug wire (similar to cracking the line on a diesel), it's not a good sign.
It usually means a bad wristpin, piston, or the connecting rod is loose to the crank.
BUT we are talking diesel here, it's likely less dramatic.

Mark.
