Swapped my 727 for a Getrag - Then put it on the dyno!

Postby Bschwarzli » Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:19 pm

Before I swapped my 727 for the getrag, I baselined the truck on the dyno. I have always heard rumors that you gain ALOT of HP by eliminating the torque converter, so I thought I would find out. With no other changes other than trannys:

727 - 178/456
getrag - 199/452

Very interesting! :D

The difference will be much greater when you up the power. Looks like your numbers are mostly stock. Now take a 300-350rwhp auto truck and swap to a Getrag.. Maybe oldcool90 will chime in on his dyno experiences, I can't recall the numbers at the moment.

Dyno type? All operator input remain the same between the two runs?

Yup, same dyno, same operator (me!).

Want to say it was a Dynomax???

Yes, was (key word) all stock. Then played with the pump and went back on the dyno....

273/650 if my memory serves...

Something is up. A stock tuned 1 gen would NOT put almost 200rwhp to the ground. They were tuned for 160hp flywheel, which meant if you got a good one and all the specs were to the high side it might put 160 to the ground in a stick truck. I remember back in the day these trucks were new when a power complaint was had the trucks were tested on the load chasis dyno at cummins and 140 to the wheels was considerd acceptable aka good. So either the dyno was screwey or somebody had turned the fuel screw in sometime in the last 20 years, even if it was just till the collar bottomed out, but not truely stock.

I saw a "stock" 90 pull 166 hp with a rag. I think the only mod he had done was high idle.

I know of a guy who had bought a 89 with a G360 new. He broke 4 trannys in the space of 4 years. They (Dodge) finally put the engine on a dyno and it was reading out more than 200 hp (cant remember what he said it was) out of a "stock" 160. They wanted him to give up the engine so they could do "testing" and get another engine put in. He said no. He showed me the truck and took me for a ride. HOLY CRAP! That thing had as much power as my old 93! I looked at the pump, tamp cap in place AND the screw having a few threads on it before the collar. Take what you will. It was a NICE truck.

I wonder if he got tired of buying transmissions?? I know they wouldn't warranty any more of them for him once they found out the power and refused to let them "fix" it. I will also put this in the 100mpg carb category as being a embelished true story since there is no reason cummins would want the engine back for "testing". It isn't like they didn't already have 5.9's then making well in excess of 200hp. I think the 300hp marine motor came out in like 1985. I also saw a bone stock 2003 which was 305 engine hp put down 315 to the wheels. A look at the dyno chart revealed they were using a 8% correction factor as well, which they shouldn't have been for a turbocharged engine.

KTA

All that is done is a 3" strait exhaust and a Banks Intercooler Kit. Other than that the truck is stock.

Well, was..... :D
