4" down pipe

Postby 95ram » Sat Nov 14, 2009 2:30 am

Has anyone made their own 4" down pipe with an hx40 flange and a couple of 4" 90*'s. Doesn't seem like it would be to hard and would be a lot cheaper then any of the ones premade.

I have 2nd gen exhaust on my '93. I used a slight bend and a 90* to adapt to the HX40 when I put it on. It was a normal 2nd gen DP with the cast elbow before.

Thanks. That last post is pretty much what I was thinking off. It looks like he's got more then 2 90* though. That one in the middle looks like prehaps a 30* elbow.

a bit dark but it was made with a 90 elbow and a short piece of 4" exh with nother 90. make sure you get the right v-band clamp not just any 3.75-4" will do.

All I did is go to the local semi/tractor shop and picked up 2 mandel 90's. I already had a straight section lying around. I welded them up and with no other bends/mods it worked perfect on both my 2wd and 4x4. I plasma cut my exaust flanges but purchasing one would be fine if no plasma cutter lying around. Both truck have the hx40 style outlets.

If you're going to make it yourself, maybe consider a bellhousing adapter like this to make switching between wastegated / non-wastegated turbines quick and easy:

Here's mine, although, 92's looks about the same.

We had to cut the first 90* right up against where it begins it's bend to get it to clear the firewall.

And the on bottom, the only mod I had to do was cut a relief almost all the way through it and close and reweld it.

We only used 2 90*s though, as far as I remember...

I don't think I have any pictures, but I just came out with a 90, and cut the down pipe at an angle, 1 inch off the outside, then welded it to another piece of straight. This gave me the right angle to go inside the frame to the bottom 90. Straight shot out the back.
