Piston pump

Postby jmono » Thu Nov 26, 2009 6:03 pm

My buddy upgraded to the new air dog units and gave me his old pump. It's a newer aftermarket carter piston type pump that bolts to the side of the block. Can I run half inch lines to it and get a draw straw from vulcan or something? Do I need to regulate it?

TIA!

what year truck did it come off 2nd gen? if so you will have to use a regulator but if it was the low pressure piston pump for 1st gens then you will be fine. yes you can 1/2 in lines and get a draw straw from vulcan.

It was off a 94 or 95 12v. What regulator would be best for the pocket? I read a little bit. Looks like anything to keep it at 15lbs?

Regulator

You can use just about whatever you want but you will have to take the pump pressure down to less than 20 or you'll blow out your seals. My little post in the link tells you everything you'll need as well as prices. You already have the pump so that's a big chunk of change you saved. Everything else isn't that bad.

15psi is the most I'd feel comfortable with.

i used the mallory pump form summit works great but make sure u have a gauge always because the pump is mechanical it dosent always make 30 psi so if u need to adjust the regulator to 15-20 psi at WOT, thats what mine is at and it runs mint just had a guy come to me to fix his truck tho, after we made fuel lines for his truck he dropped the tank to do his own brake line and kinked the return line... apparently the fuel pressure built up in the pump and it did infact push the seal out...

Don Tanklage posted some part numbers to make the 2ndGen high pressure into a lower pressure pump suitable for the 1stGens.
