Throttle shaft question

Postby MMeier » Mon Nov 30, 2009 6:32 pm

Is it possible to get it back in a wrong position ? Replaced my leaky O Ring and would like to know before it goes back together... is it aligned with the piece that has the index marks on it ?

Mark, 1st make sure the lever the spring is fastened to is going towards the head, not the fender. I've seen this on here a few times. Then, you need to line up the index marks on the shaft and the throttle lever. If you put the 3200 spring in you may need to move the lever a notch one way or the other.
If it won't start, give it some throttle, if it starts then, you need to move the lever one notch clockwise. If it starts and idles high, one notch counter clockwise.
Got it done yet?

The thing that has my concern is the shaft.... is it supposed to be up against something when I align the lever to it ? Yes, I am doing the spring at this time also. The shaft appears to be about midstream , is that right ??If I rotate it clockwise it is no where near the index marks that I had when I pulled it apart, didn't take notice where it was when I started . Originally, the slot lined up with the typical 10 and 4 marks.

IT RUNS !!!

Postby MMeier » Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:19 pm

However... now I have to get one (or both ) of those ball joint ends for the linkage. Went to pop one side on and it split on me !!! Anyone know if they are still available ? Didn't see anything leaking either, we shall see in the AM .

There are upgraded ball ends. I believe they are steel now, and come in a kit with both. Sounds like you got the lever/ shaft thing ok. Since you didn't see leaks, it must run?
Good job! 8)

Didn't see a title on the post, 'til now. ;) I used 2 heim joints from the shut off solenoid on a 2nd gen, and made the rod in between. It works slick. I know there's pics on here someplace, but good luck finding them.
I went and copied them again. Not a great pic, but you get the idea. I've since moved it to the inside hole on the lever, and I had to grind the outside of the heim because it hits the tip of the breakover spring.

Kinda what I had in mind.. but do not feel like drilling out the stud on the linkage end. I have a piece of cable I'm going to eff around with tomorrow, was kinda busy today, but did manage to wsh the fleet up all nice and pretty ! :D Whats that solenoid looking thingie up top there.... valet mode ?

I think I just ground the rivet part off and drove it out. You'll need to do it anyways if you get the kit, IIRC.
Yeah, valet solenoid. That fitting going into it? That's a swivel. Week or so ago the valet didn't work, I popped the hood, and the swivel popped out of the base. Wore right out. They were well used when I put them in, I guess I got my moneys worth.

I ran some heavy wire in place of a throttle rod for over a year. Bill saw it and took pity on me and gave me a spare throttle rod with upgraded ends that he had.

Did you order your stuff from Dodge or Cummins?

I went and put that piece of cable on it yesterday.... boy what a difference !! No load RPM's up to 3700 and have n't had a chance to see how far it will go under load , damn traffic keeps coming up real fast !!! :D Ordered the linkage piece from a Dodge dealer in Virginia... heck who knows, maybe keep the cable in there and carry the new linkage piece inside the truck. Whats the actual rule on setting the hi side screw, is it possible to have too much travel on the linkage ?

I can't believe Bill gave away a newish part. He musta been drunk and you were gone the next morning. ;)

Mark, nope! Back the hi idle screw out and put it in the garage, then adjust for WOT. Be sure to check the throttle arm doesn't hit the fuel inlet line. Tim W showed me that one. I was lacking a 1/4 inch of travel.
