Sounds like the boost went partly into the crankcase?
Turbo tight and sealing?

Sounds like your head gasket blew compression. What brand gasket did you use? The ones from the parts houses like advance and napa are crap aka Federal Mogul.

I am not certain of the composition of that gasket. If there is nothing obvious out of whack I would try a new Cummins gasket put on with brake cleaned both surfaces and new bolts and see how that does.

I put three cummins gaskets and one victor reinz in my first gen. The victor reinz looked identical in every way to all the cummins gaskets I purchased. The victor gasket held 35 psi with no problems. The cummins gasket's blew for a variety of reason's. At least one blew from hitting 40psi cold, probably two. The last one blew from hitting 45psi+/- on a not quite warm engine. I also had issue's getting in a hurry and not sucking the oil out of the head bolt holes. Having oil in those holes when you torque the head down causes all kinds of issue's. Most people wouldn't have made that mistake, but sometimes I get in a hurry. I also had the head surfaced the first and third times I blew the gasket. I'm pretty good at changing head gasket's now.

Isnt Victor/Reinz the same as Federal/Mogul?

This is one time I'd go OEM.

Let the engine get up to temp before hitting the go pedal hard(ish) for the first time.

KTA- what are your thoughts on retorques? I skipped it on the 91; did two of them on the 92.5- once at the end of the first test drive; another time at about 300mi. Few bolts turned a little (<20deg), but that was about it.

Depends if you do the 120ft-lb method then I would do at least one re torque. If you do the Cummins torque turn method then no retorque.
