Troubleshooting

Postby Bad93Cummins » Mon Dec 21, 2009 1:17 am

When its cold out, after truck sat all night, I can go out and I would turn the key, wait for the wait to start light goes off and then start it, first try will not start the truck but the second time starting would fire up, kinda rough idle at 500-550 then kinda go up to 700-750 after little bit. Also noticed sometime's when first start cold my volt meter would go crazy moveing left to right left to right and my pyro at the same time would go crazy going to 1300 then to 250 then back up intll alittle while then everthing would be fine. Anyone know what could be going on?

Tring to explian best I can.

The voltmeter swinging back and forth is your grid heaters cycling. Very normal operation, you're not gonna kill your alternator, you don't have to run out and get the worlds biggest battery (I went ahead and said that cause some folks freak-out over it). :)

The factory wants one to give the engine part throttle on cold starts. Are you doing that? You might want to hold the engine at an elevated idle once the oil pressure comes up, just for a minute. It is cold ya know. ;)

I've never had to give ANY throttle to get these trucks started. The VE shuts off with the governor in full fuel mode, and stays there til about 400rpm. SO, at starter operating speeds, it's pumping full fuel, and more pedal is kinda redundant. Something isnt right somewhere inside. BUT, to get by for now, give it some throttle while cranking if need be.

The owner's manual and the sticker on the sun-visor say give it some throttle on cold starts. What can I say? :?

If you can plug your block heater in. It really helps with the cold starts and saves some wear and tear on the ol engine

And also adds a hundred bucks a month on the power bill. It sure does help on the wear. I will agree.

WOW your electric rates must be horrible! Its about $0.10/kwhr here so plugging he truck up costs $0.15/hr. I put mine on a heavy duty timer so it comes on 2hrs before I leave for work, that way it isn't on all night wasting electricity for heat I don't need.

Im sure its not that bad. We have a heavy timer for our big trucks if they need to go when its cold out. Usually when it gets cold we pretty much shut down the equipment and trucks and switch into winter mode ( plowing and sanding ). I do know when we left our skid steer plugged in 24/7 it jumped the bill up. I never know when I will need to sand so it stays plugged in all the time. This year I just keep the starting fluid handy. :D Pretty sure our rate is .153 per kwhr. so $.15 x 24 x 31 = $111.60 But as I said that is 24/7.
