Running out of fuel! cold weather!

Postby smilesyota » Sun Dec 20, 2009 9:00 pm

I have a stock tank and feed line to the lift pump. I'm running a lp piston pump filling a big baldwin BF1259 filter with 3/8 line and then to the IP. I get about 10-15 miles then it starts starving for fuel and eventully dies out, then needs to be bleed out and will run about the same milage. The filter will not fill all the way and then starves the IP. Any suggestions? do I have a restriction in the line? No leaks!! it has been in the low teens to single digits herefor about a week and this is getting old on the side of the highway. Thanks for any help.

Thats what happens when the fuel jells. Kinda slows down and then will only idle then nothing. Is your fuel good winter blend? I ran some summer blend one winter and could not add enough power service to get it usable in the cold.

How cold is it? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Do you run an anti-gel in the tank? Is your fuel heater still hooked up, or do you at least have one? They arent such a big deal in the summer, but in winter, they can mean the difference between liquid and solid fuel.

Anyone ever put an external pan heater on their fuel tank in the winter? I know here it sometimes gets to -40, and could help, or would it be too hot?

The week here we got 30" of snow and -30 to -40 deg temps I ran straight Kerosene all week. It worked fine for me and was the only way I could keep the thing running even with the winter front on.

I will be installing a heated tank tommorow with 1/2 inch lines up to the
LP and hopefully that will solve the problem! I dont have a fuel filter heater but I have heater hose wraped around the supply line all the way from the tank that gets up to 140 when up to temp. Hopefully this will be fixed tom. thanks guys

On our off road stuff we mix 50/50 Half #2, half K1. Some of our trucks get fussy on winter blend fuel around 5 degrees so extra power sevice is needed then.

I thought about getting a heater for the tank. Some kind of a heating pad is what I thought of, strap it on and plug it in. I use the white Power Service, then if it gets below 10 I'll dump in the red 911 stuff for more prevention. No fuel heater on my 97, but guys in Alaska run without too, so I should be ok here.

Hmmm...they must have different fuel down there, because it is colder here then down there, and I haven't run any additives to stay running. A somewhat dirty filter that is working fine at minus ten can wreak havoc at minus forty though. I don't even have the grid heaters hooked up yet, cause they stay on all the time for some reason.Still sputters to life with half throttle at minus forty with a pan @ block heater. I may try to hook them up thru a toggle switch if I can't find the problem.

Remps thats going to be a heck of a toggle switch to take the current they draw, might have to use a knife switch or one of those battery quick disconects or somthin like that. Dar

Sorry, that is what I meant, a battery lockout switch. I replaced both solenoids, don't know why they won't kick out. anybody else ever have this problem? Any ideas?
