Fan Clearance

I tried to search this topic but I didn't find anything. I thought for sure someone would have posted this before...

Anyways, how much clearance should there be between the fan and the radiator. I have about 3/8" that doesn't seem like very much but I don't know how much it can go back till it will hit the engine oil fill tube. Keep in mind that I have a non intercooled engine with an intercooled front end on it. I am pretty sure Mark told me how different the fan supports are but I can't remember how much. I was going to try to make this work and not bother with the fan shroud, but if I have to I will change it. Any help would be appreciated.

They are close enough for the engine to go through when plowing hard. :lol:

I used to work at a public works dept and they had a 89 that would jump the fan through the radiator. Manhole covers at 20 mph is not a good thing. :shock: That truck died an early death. The frame was bent so bad the doors would not open past the fenders unless you jacked up the middle of the truck. Humped it down in the middle. 8)

Hmmm... that's why I had to trim the heck outta my fan shroud! As far as the fan hitting the radiator,nothing to worry about there, unless maybe the truck is totalled like Richie's example. I also noticed my non A/C fan belt fit tighter on my N/IC truck than the I/C truck.

Just checked and the carhauler, which has the intercooled fan, fan support and radiator is 3/4" to an inch away.

3/8" is very close, especially with a worn fan clutch.

The intercooled blades are actually thinner and the diameter of the fan is actually larger, as well, when compard to a non-intercooled fan.

Technically the intercooled 1st gen fan support is @ 1/2 shorter than the non-intercooled.
The non-intercooled support moves the fan forward, however, the PULLIES are offset to make the belt work between the 2 apps.

As far as the non-a/c belt being tighter on the non-intercooled, the fan support, obviously, sits @ 3/4" further to the driver's side on those engines.

I think I am going to wait until I get it back from the frame shop after the final tweeking of the frame. The nose of the frame does need to come down some so that will move the radiator further from the fan. We will see what it looks like then.
