Rookie Questions

Postby Nate » Thu Dec 31, 2009 12:30 am

So I got a 92 w250 auto thats all stock. I just ordered a pyro and a boost gauge with the idea that im gonna fiddle with the pump(all you guys say to do that first before farting with the pump), ie fuel screw, star wheel, and a denny t pin. so how much smoke is this thing gonna blow? Mind, im only gonna adjust a little bit, not as far as they'll go. Will I still have to adjust my (idle)?? What kind of hp could this do? What effect would said mods do to a tranny that seems to want to slip on occasion? All Im looking for is to give my work truck a little bit more balls, be able to haul 2 cords of wood a couple of times a year from the local mountains and not kill my truck trying to achieve more power. Sorry for all the ?'s ! any input would be helpful. and my apologies for not really knowing to much about anything!!

Every body has to start somewhere, the mods you talked about would give you a ball park of 50-75 hp and 150 ftlb tq but if your tranny is already acting up it would speed up the proses of having to rebuild it, and you will get some decent smoke., when you adjust your fuel screw be ready with a board to block off air at the turbo in case of a runaway. hope this helps. Darwin thanks for a reply. So when I adjust the fuel screw I do it with the truck running? So I disconnect the tube going to the turbo and have a piece of wood ready to stop air flow while adjusting said screw. How far do you turn the screw before "runaway" happens? Thanks~ Nate

you need to pull the intake off the turbo to be able to choke the engine if it runs away. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOMETHING STRONG ENOUGH TO PUT OVER THE TURBO INLET TO CHOKE THE ENGINE!!! i once used something that was not strong enough on a truck at work. luckly the turbo blowing up was the cause of the run away so i didn,t hurt anything. as far as how far you can turn the screw till it runs away, every pump is different. mine is in as far as it will go. some will run away before the screw bottoms out.

There is a collar around the full power screw that you can remove to get more out of it, I dont THINK the motor will run away with that collar still in place. I got a turn and a half or better with my collar still on and can feel a difference. You WILL make more power with that collar off but you have to remove the screw to take it off. If you do that count the turns on the screw and write it down, that will be a beginning place and you can screw it in from there.

i was in the same boat as u before i really went crazy with my truck u most likely wont kill ur tranny with a little tweaking as long as u dont beat on it on a regular basis if u do take the collar off i sugest cranking the starwheel up so that u can drive it without muck smoke and then really lay fuel when the air is there
