How the engine works

I haven't had much trouble starting my '96 on one battery, down to 0F to a bit colder than that. I don't have grid heaters so I don't know if that helps (or hurts), all the juice goes to cranking. When it sits unplugged overnight it lights right off when it's 6-10F or warmer, colder than that it gets rough and smoky. This is on a rig with 175 pump at a conservative 16.5 degrees timing, and 425,000 miles on the motor.

That sounds pretty normal to me. The grid heaters make a big difference on how it starts and runs right after cold start-up for the first minute or so. Mine has not had grid heaters for the past two winters. I use a shot of ether for starting whenever it's much below freezing. Normally fires right up and runs smoother, saves on cranking.
