Block Heater

Postby Rug_Trucker » Mon Jan 04, 2010 6:47 pm

Never used my block heater before. It's going down to 10 or so tonight. I came in from town and plugged it in.

Will it register on my mechanical temp gauge?

I don't have a clue if it works.

You should hear it. Look for a spark at the plug when you slip it together.

It won't heat enough to register on the guage. You might hear it sizzle after it's been plugged in for a little while.

Doh, not if it's already warm.

If it's very quiet and you listen very carefully, you can hear something start going on down inside the block after you plug it in. Don't know if I'd describe it as "sizzling," but something...

Alternatively, if you have a weak breaker on that circuit in the garage, you can wait until it's time to go to work at 5a.m. and discover there's no lights in the garage and the door won't raise. :P

Just feel it, it will get hot, and mine, if you plug it in when the engine is warm, will keep the coolant about 120F.

It's under and just forward of the turbo..... ;)

Hell, I plug mine in when it is in the 60F garage, just to help the heater blow warmer air when it gets pullled out in zero and below weather.

We'll see if it chugs this morning. It's 13 out right now.

I wish I could park it in the shop! Don't even have enough room to park a bicycle in there!

When I first got my mom's 92 (way back in 99), it would heat the coolant enough to give me luke warm air at first start (up to the first thin line on the gauge). By the time I drove 2mi I was toasty. That block heater is no longer that warm, and my current one doesnt get that warm either. But, they are 17years old.

The mechanical gauge in my truck starts at 130* It wasn't up at all. I turned the key and no need to wait to start. It fired right up and was smooth. :thumright:
