Fuel inlet mods?

Postby Remps » Wed Jan 13, 2010 3:17 pm

How does one reliably feed 30 to 70 psi into the fuel inlet? I have heard red loctite works on the stock fitting. What else besides the front seal is negatively affected by high pressure? Is the front seal on/in the fuel inlet fitting? What kind of fitting would you retap the hole for if necessary?

I think it's the front seal of the injection pump it'sself.

yes, the front seal will blow out of the injection pump, filling the cranck case with fuel. i dont think there is any benefit of high fuel pressure anyways.

KTA, how the heck does your front seal stay together? :) I am thinkin that with the 250 cc pump I had built, higher inlet pressures could help with any case pressure issues. Also thinkin 6x14 injectors. Also thinkin A1000 with boost referenced reg.I would rather just upgrade once.

The front seal is on the pump shaft that the drive gear resides on. The best fix for the front seal is red loctite and you machine a grove around the boss for the seal. In this grove you install a snap ring. I don't have any loctite on mine but I do have the snap ring and it has never failed me. With both of those done 40-50 psi should b safe. The fuel inlet on my pump was also enlarged to allow a larger volume of fuel into the pump. AN fittings are typically used but pipe fittings would b fine as well.

The stock inlet with high pressures has been fine for me using a -6 jic sized fitting and line. My seal is held in with a retainer and 3 countersunk bolts. Realize this was done to this pump about 15 years ago and a lot has changed sinc then. If I was to do another one I would use the red loctite with a cleaned seal so it was metal to metal. If you apply the loctite to the outer painted part of the seal the paint is weak and it can still blow out. I think the loctite would hold, and it has on several pumps I have built, but they don't thrash theirs as hard as mine anyways so who knows.

If you take the pump apart, it necks down and does a sharp 90* kinda like a L. At the bottom of the L, the fuel goes into the vane pump.

I'll try to post a pic of my inlet fitting and my seal retainer in the next day or two.
