smoke after 366 spring/injectors

Postby kwrank » Tue Jan 19, 2010 9:20 pm

howdy--longtime visitor, have problem(s) i haven't been able to find answers to, so here goes--installed 366 spring, 190 injectors and low press. piston lift pump over the course of a week. after spring install, truck would not idle/run with throttle plate in stock position (2/4). with plate at 1/5 and some adjusting, idle was restored, truck ran better than ever, etc. noticed heavy smoke/haze at idle/off idle, waited until injectors and lift pump were installed to try and fine tune smoke issue, to no avail. was told to advance timing; truck ran better, but still smoking. was also told running pump with throttle plate at other than original position could damage pump; re-indexed plate, got it to run, still smoking heavy gray at idle, blue gray until turbo gets going. have gradually backed fuel screw way out, starwheel is at top, pump against head (was at 1/4" when i started). egts went down 50-100 deg with timing bump. i live at 6000' and am now on winter fuel, so it's really smoky at idle/launch. experience tells me i have either damaged pump or need to jump a tooth, or am missing something that is right in front of me--truck has 170k, pump 80k on rebuild. thanks in advance, k

What about your thermostat? Is your engine temperature cold? You may want to get those injectors checked, you might have a bad one that is causing excessive smoke. 190's aren't really known to be a dirty injector so I would definitely say something is wrong. Are you running straight diesel or any additives?

smoke after 366 spring/injectors

kta--thermostat is from cummins, with 18 months, 20k miles, seems to do what it's supposed to, although it is cold-blooded. i have a winter front. far as additives, just power service with each fill up. will look at injectors, just kind of (too?) focused on pump...should add the truck has been driven at sea level, and in warm temps (did the mods in sept). at one point i tried retarding timing; truck would barely run with foot on throttle and massive black smoke event the result. thanks much k

kwrank,
This won't solve your problem but my brother and I both installed 190's this year and we also have the same heavy gray smoke when cold. I wish I knew why?
Smell from the exhaust is much more pungent too (stinks!) Both trucks run great other than that. Mine is an old pump and his is a fresh rebuild with stock settings.

Whose 190s did you get? Not all 190s are created equal. Lot of them are the marine 4 hole injector, and you will NEVER tune out the smoke in an intercooled engine.

Mine runs really clean with the bosch 190's.(N/IC motor) I think you are supposed to run the thinnest possible washer with 190's,I just used the ones that were on when I bought them for my 93.That thing smoked all the time, before and after injectors, mostly burning oil I think. My 7 to 9 mm adapters from cummins have even thicker washers built in to them, but no smoke unless I force it to with this truck. Just my .02.

smoke after 366 spring/injectors?

Postby kwrank » Sun Jan 24, 2010 11:27 am

mine came from piers as well. at this point my big concern is possible damage to the pump. haven't been able to find any info regarding that.

I dont think re-indexing your throttle will damage the pump. Lots of guys who turn up the pump a lot have to do it to restore idle speed, so I cant see the potential for damage, but then again, I'm a horseshoer, not a mechanic. I just play one online.
