Passing the smoke inspection at the police barracks...

Postby Begle1 » Wed Jun 13, 2007 2:03 pm

So, erm, if one's fuel pump is turned 2/3's of the way up, would it be possible to eliminate the "excessive smoke and/ or emissions" just by tweaking the AFC, or do I need to play Hell getting to the idle controller and fuel screw again?

Help would be preferrable within 5 days...

You should be able to tune your afc to a no smoke snap test. It may be a bit sluggish on acceleration, but it won't smoke when you mat it which is what most of the opacity tests are.

The sheriff said that I just had to drop by the barracks, give it gas and they'll see if it smokes...

Anybody else ever get written up for excessive smoke, speeding, running a stop sign, having outdated plates, no registration, driving on the wrong side of the road and having an expired insurance card before?

There was another first gen in front of me at the stop sign, so I guess I didn't stop all the way before I got on it to pull up beside him and give him a thumbs up.

The stupid part was that stupid cop sits on that stupid street corner 5 days out of the stupid week and I drive by him twice a day...

That $800 was burning a hole in my pocket anyways.

The real question is... did you learn anything with your $800?

I usually don't either!

Nothin' I didn't already know...

Altough I really didn't know there was a law against driving on the wrong side of the road.

What do ya'll think would be worse on the insurance record, driving on the wrong side of the road or running a stop sign? I can go to driving school on one, but the other one has to go on the record.

I would like to keep the "driving on the wrong side" one because I'm kind of proud of it...

my personal best(or worst) for one night is:
excessive acceleration 200.00
wreckless operation of a motor vehicle 400.00
illegal speed contest 400.00
not to mention the effect it had on my auto insurance :( .

that's what you get when you drag race another car of a red light right past 2 cops parked in a lot  . that was 20 years ago, i was 17 and dad was not pleased(neither was the judge). my 68 plymouth did bust that mustangs butt, though  .

i'd like to think i'm smarter than that now

nope, i could care less if they're sitting on the side of the dragstrip :D . really though, i now try to limit my speed exhibitions to more remote locations. i dont think i could get my old man to cover me on 1000 worth of tickets anymore.

"Excessive Acceleration?" Isnt that a bit subjective? If you were speeding while doing it, fine, but if you stopped within 5-10mph of the speed limit (oh, that's a good one), they shouldnt be able to do anything (unless it is Stoddard County MO- they play by their own rules in regards to everything. I am the only one in my class who got a speeding ticket for 17mph over in town, with my mom beside me   With a permit, no license. )

Back to the smoke test. You can also loosen your AFC hose (from the head to the pump). That will enable you to pass your sheriff's test, and not have to tune anything. So, you just have to sit there and rev it? it will still puff just a little, wont it?

Well, first I turned my smoke screw so that it was plush with the top of the diaphragm cover, and then I turned the fuel pin to the shallowest setting (which is shallower than where it was stock). And it made very little difference at all; hardly noticeable.

I didn't move the star wheel back, but that's because I forgot the direction it turns and I don't understand what it does to begin with.

So I decided to go nuclear and totally disconnect the AFC; I put a plug in the pressure line and in the diaphragm housing. That lost me a whole lot of smoke and 10 PSI at speeds above 20 MPH, but it still puts out a nice black puff when I start and I have to be gentle off the line to keep things from smoking. It still smokes black pretty good when I shift gears, and if I full-flow the fuel it's kind of a constant brown haze.

Back before I moved my smoke screw, I couldn't get it to smoke at all, even if I smashed it from a stop sign going up hill.

I'm sure that my tired old injectors and stock timing aren't helping things, but this truck smokes plenty off the line even with the AFC totally disconnected. And I'm running 6 cetane numbers of PowerService, too...

The star wheel controls how much boost it takes to push the fuel pin down. If it's bottomed out, it takes very little boost to move it.
Sounds like you may have to turn the fuel screw out some to cut down the smoke.

Wanna suggested I turn my star wheel and smoke screw all the way out to pass the opacity test. It worked, and I haven't gotten around to turning it back... could explain my turbo lag.....

On the ticket thing, I got 5 tickets in one stop in my old Hemi Road Runner. Exibition of speed, contest, yaada yaada. The only one that stuck was the excessive noise though, I got lucky.
