Intercooler for 89?

Postby Redneckintraining » Wed May 12, 2010 10:46 pm

Im looking for an intercooler that will fit on an 89 W250.Problem is I like the stock grill so whatever intercooler may fit it needs to fit behind the grill.I imagine a fair bit of the grill could be cut away and have it still work.So I suppose I could cut a bit of the backside of the grill out to make something fit.Anyone know of an intercooler that would fit?Factory only items from some vehicle otherwise it would move way beyond my price range.

I wonder if a air-water intercooler would work for towing?I know those air-water intercoolers are typically smaller than their equivalent air-air intercoolers..Then it just depends on how well you can cool the water.

Air to water coolers are all about:

Sizing the cool chamber
The GPH of the motor
The cooling of the tank
Something else I cannot remember...

In other words, air to water intercoolers are all about getting as much surface area as possible with as much water as possible and as much radiator surface area as possible.

Whereas air to air intercoolers are all about getting as much surface area as possible.

And chemical intercoolers are all about getting as much water as possible. :alien:

So then any ideas for an intercooler?

Im thinking if I went air-water I could use a couple of oil coolers with water flowing through them to cool everything. Those oil coolers are alot skinnier than a regular IC so they could actually fit behind the grill.

or is there an intercooler that will fit and leave most of the grill intact?

If this is going to be a all year-round setup, you will want a antifreeze mix.

2nd gen intercoolers fit better in 1st gen non intercooled trucks. i'd go ahead and put a 2nd gen turbo on it while you're at it. Somewhere i've got some pictures of how i did mine i'll try to find em.
91 3/4 Ton 4x4, 5.9 Cummins,DDP Fuel Pin I usually leave it out though, DDP 40 Horse Sticks, HX35W And 2nd Gen Intercooler, Single 5'' Trunout, NV5600 Swap, Dually Conversion, 3.08 Rear Gears, Soon A Custom Hauler Bed

hey-Hey!!!,
I have a 1990 and the same grill space issues as you. I am looking at an air/water coller too. I figure I can put a single-core radiator behind the grill pretty easily and the Frozenboost cooler in some convenient location. Some of the new Fords have electric water pumps so I will mount one of those to move the coolant. Probably put a gage in the water loop just to keep an eye on things. I have an HX35 to go on too and am quite looking forward to that upgrade.
cheers,
Douglas
