Question for those running electric pumps

Postby cougar » Sun Jun 13, 2010 8:35 am

I was wondering if anyone has noticed any oddities at idle and low RPMs after going from a mechanical pump to an electrical. I'm wondering about fuel being pushed through the IP now that it is at a higher constant pressure.

Mine runs smoother.

All you need is 15-17psi after the fuel filter. The vane pump inside cranks the pressure up to 100psi after it gets fuel. No different than a low pressure lift pump.

I can't tell any difference at all, except that i have fuel preshure at WOT now,
my truck never did defuel (that i could tell) but it had to be hard on the I/P
because when i tromped it would drop to 0 psi in 2 seconds. The only drawback
i have is the noise of the pump, but when my stacks are on you couldn't hear
a chainsaw running under there, so it don't mater.

I was concerned that the higher inlet pressure to the IP may cause problems or damage at low RPM low demand conditions.
So, I had the idea to control fuel pressure with boost. Using a bypass regulator and a 15psi max electric pump, I would set the regulator to 7psi. Then control a shut off solenoid in the bypass line with an adjustable pressure switch in the boost line. So when the boost level got above that set point, it would pinch off the return line and give full electric pump pressure to the IP. Only on demand if you will.

now I'm still lurning about all this lift pump stuff but as far as I know so far

the VE injector pump can tke a constent 15psi all the time and up to 18 psi under WOT / high load

becouse I'm just looking for 300hp in the fuetch and just needs some thing that will get the job done --- I'm looking to get one of those black hally fuels bypassing the stock LP --- so runing the new LP between the fuel filter and take

will be adding a fuel psi gauge between the filter and VE pump in the fuetch befor cranking up the power

http://www.jegs.com/p/Holley/Holley-Ele ... 3/10002/-1

if I was looking to make more than 300HP I would try a LP that is more powerfll with a boost controled adjustable pressure fuel regalator

I could be wrong with my math but it looks like to me the holley pumps more than two times as
much as the walbro 392. The holley is 140 GPH free flow and the walbro 392 is 255lph=67.38GPH.
If my math is off please post up the correct info.

Farmboy, the Holley also does not take into account the heavier diesel fuel. I have read that when using diesel, its about 1/2 the flow and pressure. Also, people have problems after a year or 2 where the seals start weeping.

Also, BC.Livewire, if you get a Mallory with a pump that puts out 15psi max, then attach a line from the intake to the regulator head. It then adds pressure at a 1:1 ratio compared to boost. So 15psi of boost is 15psi of fuel.

OK, so how many GPH do you need? Or, I guess what does it take to maintain an expectable head pressure on the IP at WOT? So far, what I have been looking at in the was of pumps has been in the 45gph range. That has to be better than the stock pump.

Sorry i don't know what it takes to support 300 hp but i think if you went with anything around 100 gph
and put a bypass regulator with boost ref. you would be in great shape, I think if your truck had a muffler
on it i might try to find somthing a little quieter. Jon i mite buy a little less flo but my pump puts out 13
psi and the specs say it's a 14 psi pump.

Well, I'm not at 300 and probably never will be. I also like my peace and quiet. Trouble I'm having is finding diesel compatible pumps. Though I know people use the Blues and Blacks, Holly told me flat out no. Most Walbro's are but there output is less, in that 45gph. I've heard a lot of bad about FASS and Airdog. So??? kinda floundering here.

Thats funny cause holley told me that the pump would work fine with diesel fuel, and i also voiced
my consern about dead heading it without a bypass regulator and they said no problem its made
to do that, soooo i guess it who you talk to.

Thanks Dar. I did not know that.

Almost like the Cummins rotating assembly self-destructs at 5000rpm. A myth everyone tells but not true.

No problem Jon, thats like me after i hear stuff time and time again i start believing its true, I watched
my preshure gauge very close on the way home just now and it holds 12.5-13 at idle cold and 14 psi strait
up when hot, its a $15.00 mechanical gauge from summit so i don't know how exact it is.
