Got the fronts bolted on. The stock lugs were a no go. I had some new lugs in my toolbox I had bought for my jeep that just happened to work on this. I'll have to get some more though.


Went with 265/70-17's(take-offs from a newer dodge) which measure out about ¼" shorter and ¾" wider than the 235/85-16's it had. They seem to fill out the wheel wells a lot more than stock because of the different backspacing.

I got the rear tires mounted also, but the center bore is too small to fit over the rear hubs, so I'll have to open them up a bit first. Plus when I pulled the drivers rear wheel, the drum was wet on the outside, so I'll be removing that to see whats up also.

This was a huge pain in the ass with a busted leg btw. Today was the first day I walked on it without the aid of crutches.

That looks pretty good. Can I get a pic from the front kinda so I can see how wide the tire looks on the rim? I have a set of H2's with 315/70-17's and they're too wide. I was going to drop to a 285/70, I thought 265's would be too narrow.
I'll trade a tip in return, if you want to use 2nd gen hubcaps, put a piece of 3/4" masking tape around the back edge of the outer plastic, then cut off the width of the tape with a grinder or something. Then you may have to trim a little near the lug nuts, but they'll fit the H2 rims good.

I'll grab a pic tomorrow. These rims had 315/70's as well that I took off for these tires.

I had read about modding the stock dodge center caps. I have the stock hummer ones, so I'll probably see about hacking them up first since they don't cost me anything.

Wow, big difference from 315 to 265! Thanks for the pics! I can tell you the H2 centers will fit the front, but you need to cut a hole for the axle on the rear. My buddy did it and it looks weird with the axle sticking thru.

got the rear wheels modified to fit. All the work trucks are here at the moment, so this is the best pic I could do.

on the rear you can stack two center caps on top of each other to ast like a spacer to get it out away from the axle shaft. a buddy here did it and it looks clean

It's funny this came back up today. I put my H2's on and went to cut the hubcaps like I was told....... Measure 3 times before you cut. I measured twice, cut once, and it was still too damn short!
Actually, I put the tape on and cut the ring off the cap, and then tried it. I had a 1/2" gap between the rim and cap. Then I measured the tape I used, 1" masking tape. Then I tried to get it to lock on the nuts like it should, and it wouldn't.
Be very careful when you try to mod the 2nd gen caps to fit. I'll play with it more tomorrow before I cut another one.

You'll have to excuse me now, I need to go kick my buddy in the nuts for bad directions.

haha, that sucks. We all do dumb things like that on occasion though.

Say, what are you using for lug nuts? The ones that were on the truck wouldn't work as the points on the head would have dug into the wheel before it tightened fully. I had some lugnuts in my tool box from my jeep that work for holding the wheels on, but they still seem a little small.

Dorman has what they call a 'retrofit' nut for using the newer wheels on older trucks, but they are $2-3 each. And needing 32 of them, it gets expensive quick.

I have the wheels on my '97, so I used the factory nuts. They have the wide taper and a shoulder that the caps are supposed to lock on to. I'm not even positive if the nuts will fit on a 1st gen, I don't know what thread they are! I never paid any attention, I do know that it takes a 15/16 socket on them. Go to the local junkyard and get a set of nuts. I was missing 2 and found them easy.
I have stock wheels on my '92 and don't think the H2's will go under it. (D250)
Oh, and I ran across a set of 3rd gen caps from a Megacab 6.7 truck. I played with them, and I think those will lock on the nuts after they are trimmed down. I'll let you know.

damn 2wd. with the weight of the truck on its suspension, the upper control arms rub the wheels. so will have to pick up some 1/4" spacers most likely.

Damn 2nd gen! I took it for a test drive after I put the H2's on, ran out nice, no problems. On the way to work this morning I hit a little bump and the POS almost killed me with the death wobble again. So when it cools down here I'll pull them off and put the 1st gen wheels back on.
I alternately love and then hate that damn thing!
Guess I'll drive ol' faithful for the rest of the week. If it looks hazy over central NY, that's just me!

They rub the swaybar at full lock and it sounded like a little rubbing on something when hitting bumps with the wheels turned as well.
