WTF intermittent run a way!!!

Postby Redneckintraining » Thu Jul 01, 2010 9:02 pm

A couple weeks back I slightly adjusted the pump.1/2 or 1 turn on the fuel screw and two turns on the idle screw to get it idling where it should.Shortly after that I started getting an intermittent runaway condition.Normally turning it off then back on would normally be enough to quite the runaway/extremely high idle.It went into run away about 10 miles from house on a back road into town. The speedlimit on that road is 45 and the truck wanted to go 55 if not faster.on that back road I just let the truck do its thing while standing on the brakes for the corners. After I tried to play with the throttle thinking it was stuck.in town was a whole nother story.I had to stand on the brakes just so I didn't fly though town at 60.Oh well,Ive been meaning to replace the brakes anyway. So for that 10 mile journey the throttle was in the idle position (both at the pump and the pedal). If I have too I will turn the truck down, but with most of my mods being airflow related I was getting better MPG with the turned up pump (15 vs 17.5).Oh yea the truck still turns off with the key.turn the key off then it returns to a normal idle for a few seconds then it shuts off.

so how can I get thing problem fixed? This last time was manageable but what if it does it while towing down a hill or something.

Re-check your idle screw if the lock nut came loose it could have screwed back in..

I played around with the screws abit.First I noticed that the idle screw was pretty loose. So I tightened that up about two turns. That didn't work so I turned it in some more.Eventually I pretty much ran out of adjustment on the idle screw. It has about 2 threads showing behind the jam nut. Then I tried to turn the fuel down.If I was 1 turn above stock I turned it down to about 1/4 turn above stock. No change what so ever.Start it up and it would still rev to the moon.Although it stopped idling for a few seconds after turning off the key.I dunno is there something inside the pump that could be sticking? All this happened after the truck got a little warm(didnt overheat, just blew turbo hose off) pulling a heavy load up a hill(I was pulling a car on car trailer, that was hooked up to my friends truck that was towing a lifted ranger.friend's truck was helping out a little bit)

I may be off but it sounds like you are turning the idle side in which will incease idle. There are 2 idle screws. The high idle (wide open) side then the idle side.

you mean the screw thats on the side of the pump closest to the engine? The one that is a nightmare to get at with conventional hand tools? The one that the air reference hose must be disconnected to get a screw driver in there.Or Was I turning the wrong one?

I think I may have figured it out.To lower the idle go counter-clockwise right? If so I must have forgotten which direction to turn it.OOPS!

Yes, the one that's a mother trucker to get at, and yes, lefty loosy and righty tighty.
Less beer and more paying attention might help a lot too.

I got it figured out.I lost track of how many turns it took on the idle screw to reign it in.It still needs to go in more.I think right now I am at about 1000 rpm or something.its hard to know where its at because I don't have a tach.I also turned the power back to roughly 1 full turn above stock. It seems that before I turned it to 1/2 above stock. Now it seems I need to adjust the smoke screw a bit.The truck smokes nice black clouds if I stand on it, but I turned up the truck in the first place for MPG and the smoke is just wasted fuel.

as for the smoke screw, can I access the jamb nut with a wrench?Other wise I have no idea how to adjust it.

1st, adjust the starwheel up to decrease smoke. Bring it up a little at a time until it smokes just a little when you stand on it. Less wasted fuel, better response too.
2nd, I just use a socket. Screw the screw to where you want it, then snug it with the socket. It won't barely move when you tighten it, so it should be ok.
